Happy Valentine's Day! Next: the new SPAM PREVENTION system is WORKING! Over the past week I have gotten no less that 4 SPAM e-mails (the most recent was selling "How to Spam Lists" software!!! geez) Fortunately they only hit MY mailbox and not the whole list so that's great news for all of us. ALSO: 1) I have posted all the Sharing List postings through today. http://www.intrepid.net/genealogy/elder/sharing As I put these together, I realized how critically important it is to put something APPROPRIATE in the SUBJECT LINE of postings to the list. If you will take a look at the new Archive of postings you will see that they are now listed by SUBJECT with a link to the relevant message below. Check it out (especially the 1998 ones) and you'll see what I mean. If you don't grab the viewers interest in the SUBJECT LINE they will probably overlook your message. Don't put something like "My Elder Family" in your Subject line, use something that will catch the eye of a fellow cousin. Such as the person's first name, dates of interest, and areas you are searching (at least the State) For Example: John Elder, 1800s, TN Michael Elder, 1850s, Baltimore Co, MD 2) THE USUAL REMINDER <grin>... our list defaults to REPLY TO the entire list [If you choose REPLY in your email program your reply will be sent to the list.] If you would prefer to reply to one person, such as a THANK YOU for posting something of interest to you, please remember to put the individual person's email address in the TO: section of your reply. Our list is generating a lot of email, and I am pleased about the activity. But this volume of activity makes it doubly important to be sure your posting is of some general interest to the group. 3) I sure hope more of you will post some of the individual research you have done. Have you ever inventoried the entire Marriage Index for county in Ohio or Tennessee? Have you got all the Elders listed in the 1850 census for Clearfield County, PA? Items like these can be invaluable to researchers.

"Descendants of Samuel Elder (Died about 1811) And His Son William Elder (Died in 1823) Who Settled in Moultrie County, Illinois", published 1990, by Warner Davis. In 1996 the author, Warner Davis, passed away, and Ken Parent (Member #70) inherited all of his papers including the manuscript for the above book. Ken was an integral part of the work that went into the original publication. Today I received a note from Ken that he has published a second edition of the book. He has updated the text where new research warranted, made the maps and photos clearer and fleshed out vital statistics where available. The book has long been out of print and unavailable so I am quite pleased that Ken has taken on this special offering. It is spiral-bound and 88 pages and the cost is (not-for-profit) $20 postage-paid. If you are working on this line be sure to contact Ken at the address below: Kenneth W. Hi Donna, Thank you for the information about Kenneth Parent. Joanne Andrews wife of Bill Andrews contacted me just about six weeks ago, I was stunned. Warner and I had contact when necessary and we both were able to furnish help to each other, I thought a lot of Warner, I've missed him and each and everyday I planned to drop him just a note, which we did usually did just a note to say, "I will write soon, sorry I've been so neglectful." He was so honest, kind and caring. It made me so very sad, I've seen several of our very best die in the last few years, they left much, they gave so much. You know that Warner gave his books as gifts to his "kin"...we found his direct ancestor to William Elder, who was James Elder had left a will that Warner did not know of, he certainly knew everything else, I had been told from a lady in Sullivan about Box 26 in the Moultrie Co IL Courthouse, we found the will of Samuel Elder son of Samuel Elder & Hannah _______. Donna I believe she may have been a Bryan, part of Samuel's will was left off, the Bryans withdrew as executors of the estate of Samuel Elder (sr). I wish we could do something to distinguish Warner as one who had given so much. This has not been as easy family, and so much more to go. I think I know Ken Parent, he hired a company or group in Salt Lake City to do his Elder's. Warner told me and I wrote them to offer the information for Ken (if he is the same one), they would not allow contact, Ken called me once and was very nice but he (if same Ken) went on the this genealogy group in SLC. At that time they were ever so wrong. I gave them information they asked for, until the last when they wanted me to mail them everything I had and they would copy, my "offense button" went off, I told them that two large file cabinets, and one small one, plus boxes, plus a house full of papers (I still cannot control) was not possible. I thank you, I will write him tonight, I hope he has it in order now. I wonder why Bill Andrews did not do this, he is also an Elder, very close to Warner both he and his wife Joanne went to college together, were in the service together. Could we do anything? Thank you so much, Ann -----Original Message----- From: Donna Logan <fanfare@intrepid.net> To: elder-news@intrepid.net <elder-news@intrepid.net> Date: Saturday, February 14, 1998 10:44 PM Subject: [Elder-News]: Samuel ELDER, TN, William ELDER, Moultrie Co, IL >"Descendants of Samuel Elder (Died about 1811) And His Son William Elder (Died in 1823) Who Settled in Moultrie County, Illinois", published 1990, by Warner Davis. > >In 1996 the author, Warner Davis, passed away, and Ken Parent (Member #70) inherited all of his papers including the manuscript for the above book. Subject: [Elder-News]: Tennessee Elders
From: Martha Kidwell <kidwelml@bellsouth.net>
Date: Sun, 15 Feb 1998 21:08:31 -0400
The following article appeared in the Chattanooga News Free Press, February 8, 1998: Elders Knew Davy Crockett, Moved To Ooltewah In 1835 The Elders were among Tennessee's earliest pioneers and were well acquainted with Davy Crockett. John Elder and his nephew, Robert S. Elder, made their way to Hamilton county at an early date. The family traces back to Samuel Elder, who in April 1796 paid $200 for 150 acres in the "County of Greene, Territory of the United States of America South of the River Ohio." This property at the head of Sinking Creek was sold four years later for $333 as the Elders moved from Greene County to Sevier County. Davy Crockett wrote in his autobiography that he had known the Elders "when very young. They had lived in the same neighborhood with me, and I had thought very well of them." He said the family "had very pretty little girls." The daughters of Samuel Elder and his wife, Hannah, included Esther who married Michael Widner. Margaret is believed to be another daughter. Davy Crockett was preparing to marry Margaret Elder in the latter part of 1805, but she backed out on this contract. Margaret Elder in 1829 was dismissed by the Baptists for joining the Methodists. The Elders attended Dumplin Baptist Church near Dandridge in Jefferson County. After some of the family moved to Meigs County, they helped to organize Goodfield Baptist Church. Samuel Elder died in 1811. He left Hannah "the plantation that I now live on and all the household furniture and three negroes and one bay mare and colt and all the cattle and hogs and all the farming utensils." Hannah married James Moore in 1814 and she lived until 1829. The Samuel Elder sons were Robert, William who married Rebecca Cate, Jacob, Samuel, John S. who married Nancy Sullins, and Andrew. John S. Elder was commissionied a lieutenant in the 11th Regiment of the Tennessee Militia in 1808. He owned property in Sevier and Jefferson counties and he acquired " a negro girl named Sishe" for $275 while in the latter county. John Elder was often a delegate for Dumplin Baptist Church to associate meetings, but he and his wife were granted letters of dismission by the church on Sept. 12, 1835, as they moved to Hamilton County near Ooltewah. John and Nancy Elder apparently died during the 1840's. Their son, John C. Elder, married Amanda. They later moved to Texas, then Amanda was at Montgomery County, Ark., in 1880 with her son, John S. who married Zilpha Cordelia Whittington. Other children of John and Amanda were Mary, Elizabeth and Joseph C. who married Rosanna M. Williamson. Robert Elder, who was born in Virginia about 1782, made his way to Jefferson County and on to Rhea in the section that was taken off Meigs County. He married Sarah Moore at Jefferson County in 1802. In 1811, Robert Elder was appointed captain of the Sixth Regiment of the Tennessee Militia. He acquired 160 acres for $3.36 per acre in Rhea County in 1820. By 1825, he had added another 728 acres to his holdings. The Robert Elder home was one of two sites designated in 1826 by the Rhea County Court for the holding of elections on the south side of the Tennessee River. Robert Elder was a trustee for the Decatur Academy. He had 1,184 acres and 12 slaves by 1840. Two years earlier, he had been released from a double tax on his "pleasure carriage." Sarah Moore Elder died in 1840. Robert Elder took Mrs. Mary Witt as his second wife. They were married in 1841 when he was 59 and she was 32. Robert Elder at one time had 18 slaves, but that number was decreased as he sold off some of his land. Many of the slaves attended Goodfield Baptist Church, and it was remarked that in the effor to convert the slaves "Brother Robert Elder inspired the most confidence in his black associates." Robert died in 1863 in the midst of the Civil War and Mary died in 1866. The Robert Elder children included Ava who married Daniel Cate, James who married Sarah Womack and then Mrs. Mary White, John Moore who married Mary Ann Vernon, Nancy who married William Lilliard, Robert S., Hannah who died when she was 22, Sarah J. who married the Cherokee removal soldier George W. Housley Jr., William b. who married Mary Keenum, Mary who married James H. Newkir, Louisa J., Mahala who married John Boyd Porter, Clarissa who married James W. Grisham, Amanda Jane who married Nicholas Gibbs Moore, Martha, Mary Crator who married Daniel Morgan, and Margaret. The Housleys moved to the section near Ooltewah along with Robert S. Elder. He had married Minerva Wright in 1834, then Nancy Lucas in 1836. His third wife was Matilda Jane Oldham. Robert S., who was born in 1812, had acquired 160 acres in Meigs County by 1836, then he moved near the site where Wolftever and Long Savannah creeks merge. By the time of the Civil War, his holdings were worth $13,000 and he had six slaves. He donated 3.5 acres to the Long Savannah Academy, where he and George Housley were trustees. Savannah Methodist Church was built at the academy site. Robert S. Elder was buried at The Elder Cemetery at his farm upon his death Sept. 21, 1868. Matilda died in 1875. The Housleys went to Montgomery County, Ark., after the war. The children of Robert S. Elder included Samuel Houston, Sarah Jane, Minerva Jane, Robert and James B. Sarah married Thomas Monger, a Unionist who was on the County Court. Minerva Jane married James Clifford Allen, who fought for the Union and was in the Legislature from Bradley County. Samuel H. married Sarah J. White. Their daughter, Mary A., married Aaron E. Smith. Samuel H. and his brother, Robert, had a "store boat" that made calls at the various river landings, and they also had a general store at Snow Hill. Samuel H. was a postmaster at Long Savannah. He died in 1910 of a heart attack while walking from Avondale to Snow Hill. Robert married Mary Jane Bettis in 1869, and Jame B. married Margaret E. Hall. Robert and James also had turns at the Long Savannah post office. Robert also was a photographer and James was in the rubber stamp business. Robert died in 1918 and James in 1933. Robert's children included Jennie Belle who married John Tinker. James William "Will" who married Mabel Nye. Minnie Mary who died when she was 11. Ona Griffin who married Lydie Ellen Pindell, Frederick Burch who married Clara Mae Atkins and then Hattie, and Grover Cleveland wh married May Phillips. Ona Griffin Elder was a linotype operator for 57 years for The Chattanooga Times. Lydie Pindell Elder was long active at the First Baptist Church. Burch Elder was 99 years old when he died in 1981. He was a member of Avondale Baptist Church for 61 years. His daughter Hilda married Charles R. Posey. Virginia Knight Nelson of Knoxville in 1986 completed a book on the Elders of East Tennessee. Ruth Edwards of Chattanooga had researched the family. This article is one in a series of PIONEER FAMILIES featured in the Free Press. My great grandparents were Minerva Jane Elder and James Clift Allen. I hope that this will be beneficial to someone. Martha Allen Kidwell

Hi to All, I saw the name John Morton ELDER and it suddenly dawned on me, that here in this little office of mine I have several FGS from most gracious lady in Byrdstown, TN. The late Kendrick Elder gave me this information on John Morton Elder: During the Civil War, John operated a dry goods store with his brother Allen Elder in Albany, KY. A Confederate Guerrilla by the name of Champ Furgeson operated in the area and was the subject of a ceaseless manhunt by the Union Army until his eventual capture and hanging in Nashville. The story is told tha on one occasion Furgeson entered John Morton Elder's store in search of a hiding place as the "Yankees" were in hot pursuit. John Morton threw him into a bin holding goose down. This was a common item of barter in those days. Hidden by the goose down, Furgeson escaped detection by the Union soldiers who soon departed. Upon emerging from hid hiding place soon thereafter, Furgeson remarked to John that he had just as soon be killed by Yankee lead as to choke to death by inhaling goose feathers. Olive Harrison wed John Morton and they had three sons, Robert E., Stonewall Jackson and William Benjamin. Ben was a scholar and was Pickett County's first Superintendent of Schools. Robert E. married Ella Amonet and had several children. Stone was a bachelor. Diane

Hi Robert, I'm not sure what the problem is, Robert, but I'll offer a second option for a page to try to get to - try adding index.html to the end of it. (see below) One problem might be that it is in FRAMES. Does your AOL web browser understand frames? In other words can you look at framed pages? That might be the problem???? but I am not sure. I hope you'll try again, and let me know if you still have problems because if the frames are the problem I can make a second copy of them that are non-framed pages. Is anyone else having a problem getting to these pages???? hope you'll all let me know if you are so I can fix this. I sure wouldn't want any part of our Elder site to be unavailable to folks no matter what browser they are using. This is the only page where I have used frames and did so only because the volume of material is so huge and navigating it seemed easier in frames. Anyway, please let me know if you have problems too! The second address for pscobb's GENEALOGY FORUM is not in frames so I haven't a clue why that page didn't come up for you - but give it another try and see if there is still a problem. Donna...and all... I have had no problem getting through to any of the sites indicated by your links in this and in the previous message. I'm using a regular modem 28.8Kbps connection to an independent Internet Service Provider (ISP). FYI, I've noted that America Online seems to be slower than desirable as of late, and that's just for getting logged on, getting past all their SPAM advertising, and checking AOL mail (which is always full of SPAM solicitations). If someone is using AOL as their link to the WWW, it is reasonable to expect that this slowdown on AOL will adversely affect the ability to surf the web. Quite likely, the web browser is timing out before it can get through the various server computer connections to reach the web site being pointed to. This will result in the 404 error. The 404 error can also result from trying to access a server which is temporarily out of service...down for maintenance, responding to its maximum number of requests at that time, or intervening servers being too busy to handle the new request at that time...or because the link is defective. We know that the link is NOT defective, in this case. Assuming that everything else is OK, patience and persistence will eventually get a user past the 404 error...they'll hit a free spot in the bitstream, connect with the web site, and see the page. So, don't give up, or think your links or machine aren't working right...just try again, and again, and again...you'll get there. I thought you all might enjoy it. Chris Boyd GRANDMA AND THE FAMILY TREE There's been a change in Grandma, we've noticed her of late. She's always reading history or jotting down some date. She's tracking back the family, we'll all have pedigrees. Oh, Grandma's got a hobby, she's climbing Family Trees. Poor Grandpa does the cooking and now, or so he states, That worst of all, he has to wash the cups and dinner plates. Grandma can't be bothered, she's busy as a bee Compiling genealogy - for the Family Tree. She goes down to the courthouse and studies ancient lore, We know more about our forebears than we ever knew before The books are old and dusty, they make poor Grandma sneeze, A minor irritation when your're climbing Family Trees. The mail is all for Grandma, it comes from near and far, Last week she got the proof she needs to join the DAR. A worthwile avocation, to that we all agree, A monumental project, to climb the Family Tree. Now some folks came from Scotland and some from Galway Bay, Some were French as pastry, some German, all the way. Some went on west to stake their claim, some stayed near by the sea, Grandma hopes to find them all as she climbs the Family Tree. She wanders through the graveyard in search of date or name, The rich, the poor, the in-between, all sleeping there the same. She pauses now and then to rest, fanned by a gentle breeze That blows above the Fathers of all our Family Trees. There were pioneers and patriots mixed in our kith and kin Who blazed the paths of wilderness and fought through thick and thin. But none more staunch than Grandma, whose eyes light up with glee Each time she finds a missing branch for the Family Tree. Their skills were wide and varied, from carpenter to cook And one, Alas!, the record shows was hopelessly a crook. Blacksmith, weaver, farmer, judge, some tutored for a fee, Long lost in time, now all recorded on the Family Tree. To some it's just a hobby, to Grandma it's much more, She knows the joys and heartaches of those who went before. They loved, they lost, they laughed, they wept, and now for you and me They live again in spirit, around the Family Tree. At last she's nearly finished and we are each exposed. Life will be the same again, this we all supposed! Grandma will cook and sew, serve cookies with our tea We'll all be fat, just as before that wretched Family Tree. Sad to relate, the Preacher called and visited for a spell, We talked about the Gospel, and other things as well. The heathen folk, the poor and then - 'twas fate, it had to be, Somehow the conversation turned to Grandma and the Family Tree. We tried to change the subject, we talked of everthing But then in Grandma's voice we heard that old familiar ring. She told him all about the past and soon was plain to see The preacher, too, was nearly snared by Grandma and the Family Tree. He never knew his Grandpa, his mother's name was ... Clark? He and Grandma talked and talked, outside it grew quite dark. We'd hoped our fears were groundless, but just like some disease, Grandma's become an addict -she's hooked on Family Trees! Our souls were filled with sorrow, our hearts sank with dismay, Our ears could scarce believe the words we heard our Grandma say, "It sure is a lucky thing that you have come to me, I know exactly how it's done, I'll climb your Family Tree!" Hi, Jim asked the question about Elder Manuscripts in PA State Archives after I started this note I realized that the PA Archives is in Harrisburg. I have a sister outside of Philadelphia she could call and find out if it was, although she is not at all about to do any research she waits for me to give her the family news. Knowing she would go for the information if obtainable, such as to pick up and mail. Are these manuscripts allowed to be copied, are they huge and impossible? I really would like to know what is in them? I think your speaking of the Paxtang Elder's, located about five miles north of Harrisburgh I just happen to have brought the PA file along tonight, I am trying to downsize. I have the HISTORY OF THE COUNTIES OF DAUPHIN AND LEBANON IN THE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA BIROGRAPHICAL AND GENEALOGICAL, by William Henry Egle, MD, MA, 1883. One quick look: Jacob Elder eldest son of John Elder and Elizabeth Awl and grandson of Rev John Elder. In 1815 he commenced the publication of the Dauphin Guardian. (all of the above is quoted from the book)aebp Col Joshua Elder (here is a Joshua, Jim), Col Robert Elder eldest son of Rev John Elder and Mary Baker; he married (2) Mary J. Thompson of Derry, she was b. Oct 19 1750, d Aug 18, 1813. John Elder, Jr. of Rev John Elder and Mary Simpson (second wife) was born Aug 3, 1757 in Paxtang. Samuel Elder son of Rev John Elder and Mary Simpson b. Feb 27, 1772 in Paxtang. Rev John Elder - much to long. Thomas Elder - son of Rev John Elder of Paxtang and Mary Simpson. (p. 482, 483, 484) information all from the above named source. Ann elderbrooks@msn.com -----Original Message----- From: James C. I'm back, I have the chapter of the Elder family from the above book. They have names like my Elder's (and you "other"Elder's). I tried very hard to find a niche for the Samuel Elder who died in Sevier Co. TN 1811. I cannot put this on email we would be here for days. Maybe we can work something out. Ann elderbrooks@msn.com.

I can take a physical look at the collection on my next visit to the archives...in a few weeks ... and find out what can be copied etc. My sence is 5 cu. ft. is a good bit of material....from the description it sounds like a lot of business correspondence. But there could be family material. Linda In a message dated 98-02-22 20:12:23 EST, you write: << Jim asked the question about Elder Manuscripts in PA State Archives after I started this note I realized that the PA Archives is in Harrisburg. Hi, I think my interest was out of control, 5cu ft is a lot of material. I appreciate the help but that is to much to expect. I may try and get my sister to go, she wants to be a PA ELDER, no matter what I show her, thus the key word, possible! Thank you. Hi Ann and everyone else: Thanks Donna and Ann for letting me know that my email was coming in wrong. I had an extra @wcc.net on the end of my regular email address. My correct email is: elder@wcc.net , this was mixed up in my options file. Yes Ann you can send me the material you mentioned in your letter. Sharon, I will send you another disk in Gedcom using Brothers Keeper and I think you can take it off. I have been busy working in the early election running one of their computers and will be busy all next week. I hope I can answer any mail and keep up with the ones I have. Lee
