Hello all! First, apologies if you get multiple copies of this message. I've created a mailing alias from all the Clarion County inquiries I've received, so you may be on there more than once. Please let me know if that happens, and tell me your preferred e-mail address. Now for the big news! This afternoon, I'll be uploading several new and updated files to the Clarion County Genealogy Website at http://www.public.usit.net/mcnamara/clarion/ The new files should be available after 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Please enjoy the new information at your leisure. I'll appreciate any comments or suggestions, especially identification of broken links. New sections on school and church history should be added soon. We could use volunteer help getting the rest of Caldwell's Atlas (1877) indexed for the Website -- please let me know if you can help. We can provide photocopies if you don't have a book available. If you haven't subscribed to the new Clarion County mailing list, be sure to do so! Tell all your Clarion County relatives and correspondents who have e-mail access! Subscription instructions are in the new files being uploaded today. Here's a run-down of the major items that will be uploaded this afternoon: -- Military: lists of Civil War, Spanish-American, and War of 1812 veterans; militia history; research links -- The Underground Railroad in Clarion County -- Updated queries -- Lists of biographies and illustrations and several excerpts from Davis' History of Clarion County (published 1887) -- Tons of new links to help researchers -- Lists of funeral homes, newspapers, libraries, churches, cemeteries, and other resources -- Suggestions for planning a research trip to Clarion County -- Updated bibliography -- List of holdings at the Clarion County Historical Society Library (in progress) -- Instructions for subscribing to the new Clarion County genealogy mailing list -- Updated announcements -- Updated information about the Clarion County Historical Society and its programs <-> <-> <-> <-> <-> <-> <-> <-> <-> <-> <-> <-> <-> <-> <-> <-> <-> Billie R. I was wondering if you might be able to help me confirm what I suspect about the MILLS and ELDERS. James Marion ELDER married sisters (Martha Ann and Mary Jane TODD) of my ancestor, John TODD, son of Joel TODD and Nancy Ruth LEE. John married Martha Ann ELDER, daughter of Francis MILLS and Andrew ELDER. You indicate that James Marion ELDER was the son of Lucinda MILLS and Marion ELDER. I suspect that Francis and Lucinda MILLS were sisters, and that they married brothers Marion and Andrew ELDER. Two of Joel TODD's daughters and one of his sons married into this group. Thanks in advance for any help you might offer on this maze. The Carthage Gazette (Hancock County, Illinois) Friday, July 7, 1911 Vol, XLVII -No. 3 Martha Ann Elder was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Elder. She was born in Madison County, Kentucky, May 11, 1822, where she grew to womanhood and where on September 6, 1846, she was united in marriage to John Todd, who died February 3(sic), 1905. After their marriage they resided in Kentucky for a few years, after which they removed to Missouri, where they resided until December 1865, when they removed to this state and county. To this union nine children were born, five of whom survive as follows: Dr. J.H. Todd and Mrs M.A. Pace of Maryville, Missouri; J.E. Todd of Burnside, this county; Dr. R.H. Todd of Portland, Oregon; W.J.(sic) Todd of Stroud, Oklahoma. Following her husband in death, Mrs. Todd made her home with her children, and it was while on a visit at the home of her son, Dr. J.H. Todd of Maryville, Missouri, she was seized with the illness that terminated in her death the 4th, inst. The body was shipped to this city and conveyed thence to Denver, where after funeral services conducted by Rev. W.W. Denham, was laid to rest in the family plot beside her husband. Deceased was a woman beloved by all for many beautiful traits of character. She was a Christian in the truest sense of the word, a devoted wife, a kind and loving mother, and a staunch and obliging friend and neighbor. Truly it can be said that in her death, a good, true woman has been called." Note: J.H. Todd is Joel Howard Todd, M.A. Pace is Malissa Ann (Todd) Pace, J.E. Todd is John Elder Todd, R.H. Todd is Richard Henry Todd, and W.J. Todd is William Isom Todd. Other children not mentioned in the obituary were Lucinda Frances Todd, Charles Lee Todd, Elizabeth Amandiver Todd, and Walter Grant Todd. Note: Martha's husband's obituary gives an even more detailed timeline on the family's travels between Kentucky, Missouri, and Illinois. This is about all I know about Martha Ann Elder. Any assistance in running her line would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. TJ Todd

Tenn. ELDER'S - Nancy ELDER b. ca 1830; d. ca 1850/51 (IL. or MO.?) were living in Moultrie Co., IL. Nancy was the daughter of Samuel & Henrietta ELDER, son of William ELDER, son of Samuel ELDER. Nancy married Carr FRENCH 23 July 1848, Moultrie County, IL. son of William FRENCH, Jr. (I do not know where the "Jr." came from) & Casindra Cantrell. Carr FRENCH was born in Jefferson Co., TN. They lived in Moultrie County, IL., three children Diadama FRENCH ca 1849, Moultrie Co., IL. David D. ca 1850, Moultrie Co., IL. and James H. 14th April 1851, Moultrie County, IL. James H. FRENCH m. twice, Lucinda May Lovins and I cannot read the second name. James d. 1 Jan 1927 in Eldorado Springs Cedar MO. buried same. Both Carr and Nancy (ELDER) FRENCH seem to have vanished and two of these children were living with their grandmother, Henrietta Elder on the 1860 census, but I have not found out where Diadama was. I know she lived and whom she buried, to present day descendants. It is vague. Carr FRENCH was half brother of Diadama FRENCH who married James ELDER the first child of William & Rebeccah (CATES) ELDER. Diadama was the daughter of William FRENCH they came from NC to Jefferson Co TN. according the the Elder-Palmer Bible Records. I do hope this helps, it certainly is confusing. Ann Poe

James and Diadama (French) ELDER lived in Moultrie Co, IL, circa 1849 until 1861 or later. James Elder was elected first County Judge of Moultrie Co, IL, in 1849 and served until 1861. He also served in the Illinois State Legislature several years, dates not known. -----Original Message----- From: elderbrooks <elderbrooks@msn.com> To: elder-news@intrepid.net <elder-news@intrepid.net> Date: Saturday, December 27, 1997 8:53 PM Subject: [Elder-News]: Someone wrote asking about these two: >Tenn. Hi, (also James, are you the James I talked with a few years ago or the Jim who had Jacob Elder?) Someone on the board either two weeks or two months ago asked about Carr and Nancy (ELDER) FRENCH. Nancy Elder who married Carr FRENCH was the daughter of Samuel & Henrietta ELDER, Samuel ELDER was the brother of the James ELDER (whose wife was Diadama FRENCH). Both Samuel & James ELDER were brothers and sons of William & Rebecca (CATES) ELDER who resided in Jefferson Co., TN. James & his wife Diadama (FRENCH) ELDER lived out full and active lives and both are buried in Greenhill Cemetery, Sullivan, Moultrie Co., IL. Samuel ELDER and wife Henrietta (maiden name unknown) were in Coles Co. also. Samuel died young. Other members of the same immediate family lived in Moultrie Co IL. These notes I have on Carr FRENCH and Nancy ELDER are confusing, because I do not know what happened to them. They had three children and from the census it appears that Henrietta ELDER raised the two boys and the first child and daughter Diadama FRENCH is found on one census only. She did live and marry a MONTONYE and they lived in the area. The lady who is looking for Diadama is either the great-granddaughter, I am not sure which. But the mother of this lady was a MONTONYE and her given name was NANCY. The last paragraph I made a mistake, fourth line: "whom she buried" she read married. Sorry. OK, which James am I talking with plus all the rest of our Elder's? If anyone knows about Carr and Nancy (ELDER) FRENCH or Nancy's father Samuel ELDER, would appreciate knowing more about him. He was the second child of William & Rebecca (CATES) ELDER, probably born in Jefferson Co TN just as his older brother James ELDER an outstanding citizen of Sullivan, Moultrie Co., IL. Warner Davis wrote a very nice book about his direct ancestor, James ELDER above. Thanks, Ann elderbrooks@msn.com -----Original Message----- From: James C. Hi Ann (and everyone else)! To tell you the truth, I'm not sure which I am...I used to live in Silver Spring, MD, before coming to the Denver, CO, area a couple of years ago. I was on Prodigy in the Genealogy Forum from about '91 through '94; also had a clark.net email address while in the DC area, as well as an msn.com email address (until I got fed up with being forcefed all the drivel that Microsoft wanted me to see that I did not want to waste time/money on); and I kept up with genealogy quite a while on the National Genealogical Society BBS with the FIDONET messages. My line is the GA-VA branch that goes (in reverse): James Cleveland Elder Pelius Waller Elder and Addie Mae Newell John Thomas Elder (and first wife, Lucia Lizzie Waller) Richard Silas Elder (and first wife, Mary Angeline Davis) Thomas George Elder and Eliza Ann Hail Joseph M. Elder and Sallie Jacks David Elder (and second wife, Polly/Molly Phillips) Joseph Elder and Mary Matthews William Elder and Ann ? (Travers??) Peter Elder Jr. and Elizabeth ? Peter Elder Sr. and ?? I've read the Warner Davis book; it was pretty well done. I have no data on what happened to Carr and Nancy (Elder) FRENCH. Maybe someone researching the FRENCH line can shed some light on that for us. I monitor the email postings here and in other locations and put in two cents worth every once in a while, but am so far off the beaten track out here in Colorado that I haven't much new research finds to contribute. Hope everyone had a very Merry Christimas this year and is primed for a very Happy New Year! Hello James, and all the Elder's Yes you are the James Elder I corresponded with on Prodigy and you were always lending someone a helping hand, I thought perhaps you were observing for awhile! I know four or more people who go to Joseph ELDER son of William Edmond and wife Ann. They are a interesting family. Warner did only his direct ancestor James and wife Diadama (FRENCH) ELDER, he knows that family very well. No, no James I am not a FRENCH, these family were all related from the days in East Tenn. and apparently carried that on for awhile. I know several people who go to Samuel Elder son of William Elder son of Samuel Elder (all of TN). No one seems to know what happened to this particular couple and especially the daughter named Diadama. Diadama was with her parents and then the two sons were with their grandmother on the 1860 census, Diadama about 10 or 11 not found, yet she did live somewhere and was raised by someone? Later married a Montoyne. Thanks for answering and nice to talk with you again. James what do you know or anyone about the Matthew Elder family? Thanks, Ann Happy New Year to Everyone -----Original Message----- From: James C. The following obituary appeared in the Rocky Mountain News for Saturday, December 27, 1997, of Denver, Colorado: Ý "GILBERT WESLEY ELDER, 67, of Colorado Springs died Dec. 17.Ý Mr. Elder was born in Syracuse, Kan., on May 20, 1930.Ý He worked at a flea market.Ý He was a member of the Eagle Pikes Peak Aerie 143.Ý Survivors include daughter Roe Jean Beenders of New Jersey, Gaylene French of Nebraska; brothers Darl and Dwight, both of Aurora [Colorado]; four grandchildren." Ý Recommend that other readers/contributors post ELDER family obituaries appearing in other newspapers around the country, too.Ý This would help all of us to keep our data current and, possibly, provide data not previously known.
