Dear friends,
If you have already posted your line to the Elder-News Sharing list you
might want to send your query for the newsletter to me at the "fanfare"
address...
fanfare@intrepid.net
of course we have new members of the sharing list who might not have seen
it before if you posted it quite a while ago.
But please try to keep it in "Query" format which means 1-2 paragraphs
similar to:
I am searching for my great-grandfather Eric ELDER, born about 1876 in Cambria
Co, PA, married Josephine JONES about 1897 in Somerset Co, PA. Children
were: Mark, Sarah, Susan, Michael, etc. They died in Wood Co, OH in the
early 1920s. Need Eric's parents and siblings. --- name, address, phone,
e-mail address of submitter.
ALSO - I plan to take these two issues to the printer on Wednesday, August
7th, so please get them in by Monday.
You might have noticed that we have changed the format of the mailings for
Elder-News -- you will now see at the beginning of each Subject line the
words:
[Elder-News]:
and you'll know from whence it came.
.... Thanks for all your patience....

Dear Dick,
Here is briefly the information I found which is part of what I am putting
in the mail today.
John Elder and Betsey Corson had 8 children: Samuel m. Jane Mortimore, Nancy,
Polly Jane Mortimer (probably her married name) and 5 others who died before
1887. From Will Bk A p. 104 Clarion Co. Courthouse, wife, Mary, sons Joseph
and Samuel, daughters, Eliza Elder & Martha Carson. (It's funny that Nancy
and Polly are not mentioned, although it is then still possible that Margaret
"Peggy" could still be one of the unnamed children. She also disappears
from any records between the 1850 and 1860 census recording. Her last child
was born Dec 1851. George, however, in his will of Feb 1865 to my wife,
Mary ??????) John came in 1807 40 rods east of Oak Grove School, Licking
Twp, Clarion Co. He was born about 1767 PA and d. 10-19-1851. 1850 PA census,
Toby Twp, Clarion Co, lives with Samuel and Jane. I have included hand transcribed
records from the census with my comments about possible relationships. I
tried to make these as dark as possible since they are written in pencil,
but then it picked up the writing from the page of the page. I would be
happy to recieve a copy of your line and merge it with mine when find the
connection. Talk to you soon,
Becky Messing

I am searching for any information on James and Hannah Elder, He was born in Indiana in 1831 and Hannah was born in Illinois in 1833. I Know they lived in Illinois because great-grandmother was born there in 1863 and her name was Ada Elder. James and Hannah died in Dayton WA, James in 1907 and Hannah in 1910. Ada also died in dayton, WA (her married name was Ada May) in 1936. I would like to find out if they had more children and what happened to them. Also I would like to know the names of James and Hannah parents, and Hannah's Maiden name. Thanks! vburnham@mail.wsu.edu
Hi Vickie,
Dayton appears to be in Columbia County today, and Everton's "Handy
Book for Genealogists" states it was formed in 1875 (from Walla Walla
County). According to this same book the Columbia County Clerk has birth
and death records from 1891 to 1907. The Address for Columbia County Courthouse
is 341 E. Main St., Dayton, WA 99328.
After 1907 the State Department of Health, Bureau of Vital Statistics [General
Administration Building, Olympia, WA 98501] has these records.
If you have not already tried this I would suggest writing to the Columbia
County Courthouse and obtaining the death certificate for James - quite
often these certificates (even older ones) contain the deceased person's
parent's names (and possibly where they were born). You will need write
to the State level for Hannah's since she died in 1910.
This would be the easiest way to obtain their parent's names.
Hope this helps
Donna

This is a partial answer to Query 394-4: Nancy asked if Robert ELDER,
Jr. and Rachel McKINNIS ELDER died after moving to Wapello County, Iowa
(they appear there in the 1860 census but are gone by 1870).
Rachel Elder (Mrs. R.) 1809 to 8/2/1867 appears on a headstone in Baer Cemetery
located in section 7 Soap Creek Township, Davis County, Iowa near the town
of Ash Grove.
Davis County is the county immediately south of Wapello County. Two of his
children, namely Alexander Johnson ELDER (m Marcia Jane BAKER) and Lineas
ELDER (second wife Harriett SMALES), were living in Davis County in 1870
census.
Alexander is my gg grandfather.
What happened to Robert? Did he remarry? Did he move from the state? That
is unknown to me at present.
Hope this much is helpful at least.

I was wondering as I was sitting here one night writing in my journal, does any one have access to any journals written by "our" family. In writing my journals it was my hope that someday they may be useful to my children or grandchildren. Is there any wisdom that can be shared by anyone out there? I would be interested in reading any journals that anyone would care to share. Thanks, Steve Elder Spitbird@ innova.net
I am seeking info on the parents & family of Catherine Elder b. 7 Jan
1830 in TN.
Catherine married Daniel L. Jones (b. 9 May 1826, TN) in TN. They had nine
children, of which at least the first 7 were born in Knoxville, TN. The
eldest, my gggrandmother, Malissa Emeline Jones b. 13 Jul 1848 followed
by Nancy Kate b. 9 Nov 1850, Jertha b. 18 Apr 1854, John Henry b. 23 Jan
1859, William Ira b. 10 Mar 1860, Martha Elizabeth b. 2 Nov 1865 and Rebecca
Rinda b. 22 Jul 1868.
The family moved to Wamego, Pottawatomie, KS in 1869 where they, along with
other families, founded the First Baptist Church so they may also have been
active in the Baptist Church in the Knoxville area.
Catherine Elder Jones died 1 Apr 1893 in Wamego, KS where she is buried.
Anyone have information about this family?
I am descended from Robert Elder, Sr., Jackson County, Ohio, through
the son Robert Elder, Jr.
I remember Donna saying that it is thought this Elder line came out of Northumberland
County, Penn. While at the Iowa Genealogical Library last night I found
the following information: Pennsylvania Archives, Third Series, Volume 19
Northumberland County, Buffaloe [sic] Township page 416 1778-1780 State
Tax
Thomas Elder valuation 70.17.0
page 456 1781 Assessment
Corlenius Dempsy [sic] 50 acres 1.2.11 tax page 515 1782 Supply Tax
Cornelius Dempsey 50 acres 17.9 tax
page 689 1785 State Tax
Thomas Elder 1 cattle .9 tax
I find this interesting since a Dempsey witnessed the will of Robert, Sr.
Also, one or his children is named Cornelius Dempsey Elder.
Further, in the 1820 Clinton Township, Jackson County, Ohio census, page
143, Thomas and Robert Elder are next door neighbors. Thomas 2 0 0 0 1 0
1 0 1 0 0 0 1
Robert 1 1 0 0 0 1 3 1 3 0 1 0 2
Who is Thomas Elder? Is Thomas Elder in Ohio Robert's brother? Is Thomas
in Pennsylvania the same Thomas or the father of both Thomas and Robert
or is there no connection at all?
Sandy -
Received your snail mail today - have not had a chance to read it yet. Thank
you. I am not aware of any pertinent Elder book. I will be on the lookout
and post it if I do.

Is anyone in our group working on an Elder line in Nichols, Muscatine,
Iowa. We were there last week (quick trip), and finding a number of Elders
in the cemetery I went ahead and shot photos of the oldest stones. We also
bought the town's Centennial History with some biographies of this ELDER
family in it. If anyone is interested, will be glad to make copies of the
photos and history.

Eleanor Elder was the oldest child of Wyche Jenkins Malone Elder and
Mary Jane Burt. She married Yancy Manning Satterwhite and moved to Randolph
County, Alabama. Yancy was killed during the Civil War and the last record
I have of Eleanor was that she was still living in Ranldoph County in 1870
with some of the children. According to family researchers, she died in
August 1872. Does anyone know where she was buried or have any additional
information on her. I know that the younger children were sent to live with
various relatives after she died.

Hi Steve,
I am aware of "at least" one Journal authored by an ELDER gentleman
- Joseph B. ELDER (of a Pennsylvania line). I published some of it in one
of the EFN back issues. Some of the information in it helped several of
the descendants find their way back into the family tree. If you enjoy reading
journals you might want to write to the family members in this line as they
republished it a number of years ago and might still have copies around.
If so, let me know and send you their addresses.

PS - if it weren't for the family Journals (so to speak) that some of my
ancestors wrote, I probably never would have been interested in genealogy
to begin with. They are my greatest treasure thanks to my grandmother for
saving them. Even the silly story about my gggrandfather coming from his
Hamburg,Iowa homestead to the ancestral home in Pennsylvania and seeing
"rainbow trout" for the first time in his life! With trout streams
all around me, it isn't hard to imagine his wonder.
