Pam Giles sent me the following message which I'm passing on to you. Pam isn't on this list, but I'll be happy to forward messages; OR you can write her directly at: pgiles@west.ga.net I am hoping you can help me with a problem that I have trying to find the parents of an orphan family member. I am looking for information on the parents of Harriet A. Malaier born Nov. 1861. She was adopted ( May not be legal adoption) by Young Gray and Annie Elizabeth Malaier Gray (b Jan 25, 1847 d. July 05, 1920) I believe Annie Elizabeth Malaier to be the daughter of Martha Adeline Elder(b. 1818) and William Pendelton Malaier. You state that Martha A. Elder, child of Joshua Elder and Anne E. Gray, married Pendelton Malaier. Do You know anything about any of the children of William Pendelton Malair and Martha A. Elder. I have their children, and I believe the only one who could have fathered Harriet Malaier by dates is John W. Malaier who was b Dec. 07, 1841 and died Oct 19, 1864 ( presumably in the Civil War), but I can't find any proof of this.

Help Elder clan! I have recently received several e-mail notes from AOL folks through the Grayson County KY story posted on the family web site. Some of these folks seem to have relevant information on the family and all have desired replies. Yet my return messages are always rejected by AOL because "the addressee is not accepting messages" from my account. Is there any way around this? I suspect that none of the AOL users knows this happening, but they all think I'm not interested in their information or am too snooty to answer. Is there another way to reply to them? Thanks. :-) - Dan Elder -Reply: dan.elder@fbcvidalia.org

Below is some information and sources pertaining to Thomas, Robert, James & John Elder of White Deer Township, Northumberland Co. Pa. I'm looking for additional information for James Elder, Northumberland Co. The Annals of Buffalo Valley, Pennsylvania 1755-1855 Collated by John Blair Linn references Thomas Elder of Northumberland County a number of times. On page 179 Thomas Elder has rented pew No. 31 of the Buffalo Cross-Roads Presbyterian Church with David Buchanan and Robert Elder (1791). On page 306 Thomas Elder is listed as an inhabitant of White Deer Township (1796). This indicated he was a school master with a cabin, stable, and corn-crib. James Elder is also listed as residing in White Deer Township and it appears that he may live with Thomas. On page 332 (1802) Robert Elder is listed as a resident of East Buffalo Township, Northumberland Co. and that he lives on John Kelly's place. Thomas Elder had a son who John participated in the Rev. War and the following pension file appeared in the Elder Family Newsletter, Vol. 3 #2, (April, May, June 1995) Page 19. "John Elder--Mary. Pension Record #w24117, Pennsylvania Line. Soldier was a son of Thomas Elder and was born in 1762 in Chester Co. PA and lived in White Deer Valley in Northumberland (later Union) Co. PA at enlistment. It stated after his service soldier went to Chester Co. PA until the close of the Rev. War then returned to Northumberland Co. (Union Co) and about 1814 he moved to Centre Co. PA and he applied there 29 April 1834. He died 19 Jan 1835 at Salona in Centre Co. PA. He married Mary "Polly" (or Molly) Dougherty on 7 Nov 1793 at soldier's father Thomas Elder's home in Whitedeer Twp. PA. She was born Nov 1766 and died 30 or 31 Dec 1848. Children listed were: Margarit or Peggy born 7 Jul 1794 and she married a Thompson & in 1839 she was living in Holmes Co. OH. James born 22 Nov 1795. John born 14 Apr 1797, Thomas born 20 Oct. 1798, one name torn off record was born 13 Jan 1804, Robert born 2 Nov. 1807, William no birth date, Mary no birth date but she married a John Wilson, Ann no birth date but she married a George Walters and the oldest child shown was Joshua born 18 Mar 1793 the name of his mother wasn't given. The widow died leaving 5 children: Margaret Thompson, James Elder, Ann Walters or Waltors, William Elder and Mary Wilson. The son, James Elder, made application 23 Feb 1852 at Clearfield Co. PA and was a resident of Bell Twp. PA." [Source: "Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files" Vol 1 A-E: abstracted by Virgil D. Subject: [Elder-News]: delurking with info on Antrim, Coshocton and Monroe County lineage
From: jessie <jessie@sd.cybernex.net>
Date: Sun, 23 May 1999 00:09:05 -0500
Hello everyone! I ran across the website for this list a couple of days ago while idly doing a web search for Ruth Elder, the famous aviator, because that is my name as well. I do not do genealogy but do have an interest in my family history so I took the time to read some of the postings and signed up for the mailing list. Now, after working my way through the *entire* archive from 1996 to Dec. 1998, I believe I have some information that might be useful in answering some queries that were posted. Because the information is rather extensive and I am not trained in genealogy, what I've done is set up a page at my website at fortunecity, where you can read about the lineage of my family of Elders, starting with John arriving in Antrim County, Ireland in 1680 and going through a number of sidebranches that clustered in western PA, Coshocton Co., OH and Monroe Co., IA., plus little tidbits about South Carolina, Oregon and Quebec. In particular, I am wondering if my information will be useful (or at least of some interest) to the following people: Gary Schnell, who was looking for Samuel Elder, b. 1790; Charlie Gjersvik, who was interested in Scottish Elders in Ireland; Ben Holt, who was looking for Scotch-Irish Elders who emigrated to South Carolina, although my clue might be too late by 30 years to apply to this question; Lacedonde, who was looking for Mathew Elder, who moved to Quebec prior to 1842; David Howard, who was looking for Samuel Elder born late 1600's and pondering about a possible brother John, born 1690; SewDivine (aka Judith Elder Bowers-Kruse), who is descended from John Elder, born 1690, Antrim Co. (me too!) and is working on the Henry Elder lineage; Karen Crawford, who wondered if Samuel Elder of Antrim and Robert Elder, founder of the Paxtang line could have been brothers (um, don't think so but I'm no authority); Doug McLaughlin and Alana Francis, who are part of the Oregon branch of my lineage. Rodney Elder, who seems to be working on this lineage; Now before anyone gets their hopes up, *please* understand that the information I am providing is not presently verified in any way by official records. This is information found in a family history written in 1909 for the benefit of the author's children. I have no idea where the facts were gathered from, and my best guess would be from family bibles I have no knowledge of. There may be mistakes all through this information, I have no way of knowing. I cannot help you verify the data. I can however provide what information I possess and hope it will provide some clues to information that is "official" or "provable" or whatever you call it. :) The family history also contains anecdotes about these lives that you might find of interest. Please contact me privately if you need more information of this sort. Here's the URL: http://westwood.fortunecity.com/farhi/469/elder.htm Well, this is getting awfully long. I hope I haven't violated any unspoken list or genealogical rules here <G>, just wanted to get what info I possess out where someone might be able to use it. Enjoy! and if it helps any, I'd be thrilled to hear about it! Jessie (aka Ruth Elder) jessie@sd.cybernex.net

Hi Ken! thanks for the offer of the info on Ruth Elder, the pilot. that's very kind of you, but it really was just an idle search on the web and not a real interest of mine as i have no evidence that she was actually a relative of mine. there is nothing on my web page about her, so perhaps your cousin won't be interested. thanks again! At last, I seem (with the intense help of others) to have traced back from my wife, through her grandmother, Ida Kate Elder Davis, through Robert C. Elder, Jr., her father, through Robert C. Elder, Sr., through John S. Elder, through Daniel E. Elder, through Edmund Elder, through William Elder, back to Peter Elder, Jr. I have some info on all of these, but I can use all the info anyone can spare to tighten up connections, add dates and siblings, complete names of spice (spouses?), and go back further. If there was a Jr., then there had to be a senior! I may so enter just the name Peter Elder, Sr. Also, there was a guardian for Edmund's children, Stephen Williamson, for which I seem to have found a scant bit of data on the LDS site. Can anyone tell me more about how he got those children, or, why? Also, I can use all county references, such as county of marriage or of birth, or of death. Thanks for this sweeping request. A tidbit or two would make me very happy... Vince

Vince, You can find out more about Peter Elder at the Elder Surname website: http://www.intrepid.net/genealogy/elder/ Edmond isn't my line, but here's a few tidbits I've picked up: Thomas Elder, who died in 1853 in Bedford County, listed his parents as Edmond and Sally Elder of Dinwiddie County. That same death record puts Thomas' birth in 1773. "Land Records, Dinwiddie County, Virginia, 1752-1820," by Thomas P. Hughes Jr. and Jewel B. Standefer, includes: "Elder, Edmund (Edmond) Estate - 1787-1798 taxed on 200a." "Rather, Jessee - 1797 taxed on 35a conv by Edmund Elder"

Folks... It is amazing how much more you can milk out of a collection of data if you just look closely enough at it. I have John S. ELDER, who married twice... Eliza A. ?, first; Martha JOHNSON second. Martha was much younger than John. Possibly there was a shortage of men at the time, and... Martha was getting a touch older (about 30). At any rate, in the 1870 census, there is included in the household, Sarah Y. Johnson aged 23, and Martha Johnson Elder, aged 45. That makes Sarah Y., likely, a daughter from a first marriage, and thus still another reason for Martha to marry an older man. That also makes me think, in view of the infrequence of names beginning with Y... especially given-type names, that the Y may possibly have been the maiden name of Martha, herself. Young immediately pops into mind, but there are others. Does anyone have an inkling if Martha JOHNSON was originally Martha YOUNG, or somesuch, and remarried, to John S. ELDER? Vince

Hiram is the son of Oliver Elder of Campbell County, VA. His wife is Sarah A. Williams. Is the Census for Campbell or Charlotte County? Thank you. That answered my question. It is a side branch and not the one I thought. Unless Eliza A. is the Eliza A. who was married to John S. Elder of Campbell... I think Campbell was the census. Yikes! It is the wife of John S. Elder, if age is accurate. Or else a live in companion, through loss of family. Hmmm. How old was Sarah in comparison to Hiram, please, or, in other words, do you have dates? Thanks! Vince Jim Golden wrote: > > Hiram is the son of Oliver Elder of Campbell County, VA. Here are my Elders from Peter Sr., through John S., and on up to my wife. Vince Jim Golden wrote: Who is John S. Elder? Descendants of Peter Elder, Sr. Generation No. 1 1. PETER1 ELDER, SR. was born Abt. 1620, and died August 05, 1674 in Old Rappahannock County, Virginia. Notes for PETER ELDER, SR.: AFN: NM7V-HV The Book: Genealogy of the Elder Clan, compiled by Lee M. Elder (elder@wcc.net), begins with info such as this: This extensive book begins with Peter Elder who, according to family tradition, came to America in the early 1600s along with two brothers. Though no records of their immigration have been found, they are said to have landed in Norfolk, Virginia. Peter came over as a stowaway and working out his passage with a rich merchant, it required several years. His brothers later went on to other parts of the country. One to Maryland and one to Ohio and then on to Harrisburg, Pa," continues the rich family history. Peter's Will, probated 1674 in Rappahannock, Virginia (now Essex Co), named only one child, Peter, who was "bequeathed" to the child's godfather Richard Peacock until "my son comes to be one and twenty-four years of age." Many descendants of Peter Elder are brought down to present time in this 177-page softbound book. In addition to the descendants chart (with 23,000 names), there are 35 pages of families narratives, deeds, wills and other information on this early Virginia Elder family. Will book 10 page 398-names William Terrell administrator of the estate. Then it says Robert being deceased 8/1848-7/1850(I don't know what that means) Order Book 26 page 139-Ordered that Henry Robertson, Robert Johnson and Thomas Fox or any 2 of them do state and settle the account of William Terrell-adm. of Ro. C. Elder, deceased.(forgot to get the date) I think I found a clue maybe... sometime in the 1870's, there is a will of John S. Elder leaving his estate to his wife Martha and names a Robert C. Elder. If that is your Robert C. Elder's son... this maybe his grandparents. I took the liberty of going on with William Terrells line. You may have this already, but if you don't... The funeral will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Preddy-Teague Funeral Chapel [C'ville] A graveside service will follow at 2:30 p.m. in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Covington. Her stone reads: Ida Kate Elder Davis 1882 - 1969 Known as Catherine Elder Davis Notes for GEORGE H. DAVIS: 1910 U.S. Census tape T624-1647 was the source of some of this information. Enumerated April 29, 1910 by S. Finley. Outside of Goshen. 1920 U.S. Census tape T625-1906 was the source of the following information: George, while still married to Ida Catherine, was in a separate household with their oldest son Edward age 14. It also revealed that George and Edward were living on Water Street, Goshen Town (only one other family was listed as living on Water Street. Just above the mention of Water Street was Staunton Ave. Just below it was Maury Ave. It listed Ida Catherine Davis as living on Church Street, with a number of other households being on that same street. The Date of Death for George is only, at best, at this point, an educated guess, based on Charlottesville City Directories and common sense. The 1956 and before directories seem to list Ida Catherine Elder Davis as Mrs. Catherine E. Davis. 1957, and possibly later, list her as (wid G H), or in other words, as the widow of George H. Davis. This would seem to indicate 1) that she became a widow around 1957, and 2) that she had not divorced, or been divorced by, George, but was merely separated. One would not be a widow if they were divorced. This is somewhat flimsy evidence, admittedly, and will be adjusted upon the receipt of better. Called George P. Davis in the Births book of Rockbridge County. Davis, George P. Apr. 1871 Jane & Lewis P. Davis farmer reported by father Children of IDA ELDER and GEORGE DAVIS are: 18. i. EDWARD H.10 DAVIS, b. The A may be incorrect, either in the case of the father only, or of the father and the son. The USA may have meant United States Army. Sheila Jane Davis Summers seemed to think he would have been old enough to have enlisted, and she believes he did at one point enter the military. Not to be repetitive, (I may have talked about this before, don't remember) I wish to know each and every one of Oliver ELDER's children (names, dates, etc.), since he lived next door at one point at least, to John S. ELDER. And John S. ELDER married apparently at one point, an Eliza A. ELDER. Now, I know this Eliza A. ELDER was not Oliver ELDER's granddaughter, the daughter of Hiram ELDER. Timing was impossible. But I strongly suspect Oliver ELDER had a daughter Eliza A. ELDER, who married John S. ELDER. Tracing back, both Oliver and John go back to William ELDER married Ann. Thanks for any leads on this. Lee, I've been impressed with your helpfulness to others and decided to ask for help myself. This question concerns Joseph Elder of Campbell County, VA, who died in 1800, and his son James. Please read the following notes and tell me what you think. It's a little long because there is no direct evidence that I can find. I've been seeking the parents of Joshua Elder of Rutherford County, TN, who was born about 1795 according to censuses. I have found links to a James Elder: My gg-grandfather, Joshua Elder, and his parents were born in Virginia. [1880 Census, Rutherford County, TN, microfilm T9-1276, page 9.] Joshua Elder was administrator of the estate of a James Elder in Rutherford County, TN, in 1824 (no relationship recorded). [Rutherford County, TN, Wills, Inventories and Settlements, Volume 16, page 67, 18 Oct 1824: inventory.] A James Elder age 45 or over had 3 boys and 6 girls in 1820 in Rutherford County, TN. [1820 Census, M33-124, page 99R.] Ages of the children were: a boy under 10, a boy 10-16 and a boy 16-18; a girl 10-16 and five girls 16-26. Also living in Rutherford County, TN, in 1820 were James Elder, Jr. and another adult man (his brother, Joshua Elder?), both age 16-26, apparently near James Elder, Sr. (judging by Census page numbers). [1820 Census, M33-124, page 100.] With these facts in hand, I searched 1810 Census records for VA and found the following: A James Elder age 26-45 had 4 boys and 6 girls in 1810 in Charlotte County, VA. [1810 Census, M252-68, page 1013.] Ages of the children were: two boys under 10 and two boys 10-16; three girls under 10 and three girls 10-16. I concluded that the James Elders of 1820-TN and 1810-VA could be the same person, since the ages and numbers of children could match up. Therefore, I searched for further evidence connecting the two. I found a possible link in the brother-in-law, Jesse Mason, and his wife Susannah. They apparently were close to James and Polly Mason Elder in VA: James Elder and Polly Mason married, bond dated 9 Sep 1789; consent by father, John Mason; surety and witness Jesse Mason. [Marriages of Campbell County, VA, 1782-1810, page 33, L. H. M. Baber and H. L. Williamson, 1971.] Francis M. Petty sold land in Campbell County, VA, to John Elder, bounded by Joseph Elder, James Elder and Jesse Mason, recorded 12 Jun 1797. [Campbell County, VA, Deeds, Book 4, 1796-1799, page 199.] Jesse Mason and wife Susannah sold 100 acres in Campbell County, VA, 8 Oct 1813. [Campbell County, VA, Deed Book 10, 1813-1815, page 242.] And here they are in TN: Susannah Mason was granted administration of the estate of Jesse Mason, deceased, 13 Jan 1817, in Rutherford County, TN. [Rutherford County, TN, Minute Book, Volume K, 1816-1817, page 41(125).] So it appears that Jesse Mason and family moved to Rutherford County, TN, between 1813 and 1817. In addition, here's James Elder: Inventory of the Mason estate mentions debt of James Elder, 19 May 1817. (Also mentions Coleman and Obediah Mason, for whom there also are records in Campbell County, VA.) [Rutherford County, TN, Wills, Inventories and Settlements, Volume 4, 1816-1820, page 15(63).] So there is a link if the James Elder mentioned here is the same one mentioned later in other Rutherford County records. That's mostly what I've had until K. Chamberlain provided the names of eleven siblings including her David Elder and Joshua Elder in Rutherford County, TN (David, James, Joshua, William, Claborn, Lucy, Elizabeth, Sarah, Nancy, Frances and Susan). Joseph Elder's will, dated 16 Jan 1800 and proved 8 Sep 1800, names wife Mary and children Joshua, David, James, John, Polly, Betsy and Jeremiah and granddaughter Winnifred Biggs. [Campbell County, VA, Will Book 2, 1800-1810, page 1.] (Winnifred Biggs was the daughter of Nancy Elder.) Nancy Elder, daughter of Joseph Elder, married Joel Biggs in Brunswick County, VA, 7 Apr 1783. [Marriage Bonds and Ministers' Returns of Brunswick County, VA, 1750-1810, C. L. Knorr, 1953, page 7.] Note the commonality of names between Joseph's children and those of his son James. James' older brothers Joshua and David participated in the Revolutionary War. His grandfather was William Elder. He had sisters Nancy and Betsy. There was a Frances Mason in Campbell County; Susannah was the sister-in-law. Does this fit in with your knowledge of the family?

Vince, The land record doesn't say, but I believe this is Joseph and Mary Elder's son. A son John is named in Joseph Elder's will in 1800. Joseph's wife and son John were the executors. Incidentally, John Elder married Ann Johns in Charlotte County, VA, 1 July 1799. Hi, not to interrupt this good flow you have going but I would like to say only a couple of things. !. If any of you from Joseph Elder happens to know their younger ancestors this may help. Sterling Elder goes to Joseph Elder and that one line can be proven by a series of wills for each generation. I do not have the information on the wills or the wills. I have a friend in Sacremento CA. and they are her ancestors and well documented. Wilma was with the Sacremento Library. I would not be surprised if the information is among their material and available by mail. This information is also among the information in Salt Lake City and you might be able to try to get it on line now. 2. I want to move that Elder family, I know all lines cannot be resolved through genealogy. Do you know I've worked on these Elder's since 1978!!! I admit I have to have one good source. I will try again. It has been awhile since I last posted my query for Thomas Elder. He was born about 1822 in NC, and married Elizabeth Jones about 1847. Thomas and family were living in Russell Co, KY in 1850. Their children were: Granville born 1848; Zerrilda born 1849; and Umrah? born 1850. There was also a Polly Elder, born about 1790 in VA, included in their household. Does anyone have a missing Thomas in their Elder family? I have hit a brickwall, and any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you, Bertha
