Subject: Surname of ELDER

Elder is a comparatively rare name, and appears to be charactoristic in origin. Research indicates it can be associated with the English, meaning, an "older man".
There are various spellings of the surnam ELDER- they are: ELDERS; ELDAR; AND ELDARE. Also, Elder is part of the Clan MACINTOSH. The name Elder derives from the elder of two sharing the same forename. A sept of Clan Chatten of which MacIntoshs are chiefs. John Elder was a burgess in Edinburg in 1423. About the Elder Coat of Arms: The earliest coat of arms for Elder is discribed as follows, and became unique to an early Elder: "ar. a fess wreathed qu. and vert betw. two mullets of the second in chief and a dolphin hauriant az. in base".
When translated, the blazon also describes the original colors of the Elder Coat of Arms as "Silver, a horizontal band wreathed red and green between two red five pointed stars on top and a blue dolphin placed vertically in base". Above the shield and helmuet is the crest , which is described as: "A right hand holding a roll of paper, naturally colored". The meaning of the colors in the Coat of Arms are: Silver-represents serenity and nobility; Red-represents fortitude and creative power; Green- means hope, vitality, and plenty.
The motto for the Elder Coat of Arms is;"Virtute Duce." I hope this will help some of the "Elders" to see what their family name means, and to be proud to be an ELDER.

Subject: Elder name & coat-of-arms

The contribution to the meaning of the name Elder along with a description of the coat-of-arms was interesting and useful but only for those who can prove descent from the Elder family described and, more importantly, can prove descent from the Elder who was granted the coat-of-arms. Moreover, I think most of us researching the Elder family name would disagree with the first sentence that it is a comparatively rare name! Not in America, it isn't! Many of us make slow progress because it is such a common name. It would be wrong to think also that all Elders came from the same original holder of the name. Elder also means "one who lives by an Elder tree". There are also Germans named Elder, and probably also Dutch and Scandinavians. It is probably tempting for many Elder descendants to put the described coat-of-arms on the front page of their genealogy, but it would be dishonest to do so if you cannot prove such a descent. If you CAN prove such a descent, consider yourself darn lucky!!

I was interested in your Elder-News bit about the Scotch Elders. The Samuel Elder I am researching was said to be of Scotch ancestry. He was born in PA about 1790, married Anna CAMERON, either in PA or OH. He lived in Seneca County, OH in 1830 and 1840, and in Whitley County, IN at least from 1860 until his death in about 1880. Do you have any ideas on how to track down this guy's ancestors?

Also, I'm going to Scotland in June. Your piece is the first I've seen connecting Elders with a Clan. What is your source for this info? Where should we go in Scotland to learn more?

Hi!

I'm new to the list. Charity ELDER (b. 1791; d. 30 Sept 1865) was my third great grandmother. She was the daughter of William ELDER and Ann McATEE. Charity married James JARBOE in 1810 in Washington Co., KY.

Does anyone have anything else on Charity, her siblings, parents, ancestors, or descendants?

Willing to share information.

Best regards,

Mike Bradshaw

Hi Mike,

We have several members who are direct descendants of William and Ann McAtee. You will find them on the Member's Line at the Elder Family News Web Page under Member lines: #130, #153, #162 and #209. Of course there are many other members who are also descendants of William's great grandparents who were: William Elder and Elizabeth Finch.

Hi again Mike,

you're welcome - this was an easy one <grin> as I have done much personal research on this line ... at first I thought it was mine. I don't know if you are aware of this but we've nicknamed this line the 'CATHOLIC ELDER LINE' since William (b 1707) married into the religion and many descendants today have carried this on.

Yes, I am an Elder descendant. My Elder line, being also from Maryland and in the same general area, was also CATHOLIC! Now 9 out of 10 researchers would have made the same supposition .... right? Well, they don't tie together (at least we haven't tied them together yet). But by the time I realized this, I had already done tons of research... but I made good use of all the work I did by publishing it in the Elder Newsletters so it wasn't for nothing. But I am not the only person who contributed to those articles - the family is well researched and Eddie Lee Mary Comeau takes much of the credit. She lives in Louisiana and has researched this family for over 20 years.

Now I should make one thing clear about my CATHOLIC Elder line. As far as my own research has taken me, my gggrandfather Dr. Basil Dorsey Elder and wife Lucinda Howard were Catholic (Lucinda being a convert early in their marriage). But as far as I can tell, none of their other relatives were!

I am trying to locate the parents of Edward Elder. I don't have much information on him. I do know that he married Magdalena Kraft and died in 1895, probably in Campbell County, Kentucky.

In the IGI list an Edward W Elder born b. 1-17-1873
Father William Elder
Mother Kate

married 12-6-1894 to Magdalena Kraft.

Does anyone have any knowledge of this?

Also I found I found the following family in the 1880 Hamilton County, Ohio census:

Kate Elder 30 divorced Baveria Baveria Baveria
Edward 8 Ohio Canada Baveria
William 6 Ohio Canada Baveria
Louise Frick 20 Sister Ohio Baveria Baveria

Does anyone have any information on this family?

Thanks for any assistance.

Dan

I found the following Elders in my research and am looking for any information regarding them.

Baxter Elder and wife Elnora (Leet) Elder son - Bill Elder
daughter - Minny Elder

Elnora was sister to Cora Leet and had a brother Camdon Leet. Camdon (my great-grand uncle) was killed while crossing a railroad track in an area known as Elder Park near LaGrange Ky. My mother remembers this area of land owned by the Elder family, and knows that her grand-aunt married and Elder but does not have any more information on them. My mothers side is the Leet family.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Thank You.

OK ... so I didn't think about warning against this one either... sorry guys....

The following was sent to the entire list:

>I was having trouble sending to you so I am testing my email.

PLEASE don't send "Test Messages" to the entire list (there are over 50 members now). If you have trouble sending a message to the list, please send me an e-mail (to: fanfare@intrepid.net) and I will try to help with the trouble you are experiencing.

Helpful Hints:

PLEASE if you respond to someone's query, send your response to the list as well so that we might all benefit from your wisdom <grin> And it might just be that your response will trigger someone else's memory (with a new piece of information) and the answers will grow and grow and grow. Sharing information (even if it's just a little tidbit) is what this list is all about!

I know that some of our members are reluctant to answer queries because they are not absolutely sure the information they have is right. But please remember there are very few absolutes in the world of genealogy. - donna

I have a recently published book"Old Sorrel:The Life of Gilbert Moore",Copyright 1994 by Rev. Robert E. Walker, Registered, Library of Congress Registeration number TX 1-635-768. The book was self published and I do not know about avaliability of the book, there were limited copies printed,I will find out. Acording to Walker there were at least four Elder-Moore marriges. Each of the connections appear to origionate in the Rutland,Murryfield(Chester) Mass. areas. Some families migrated to New York(Ostego and Schoharie Counties),Ohio(Butler Co.) and on to Indiana (Franklin, now Rush Co.,Wabash, and others).

Elizabeth Elder b.1751 d.4 July 1820 married 4 Nov.1773 in Chester, Mass. to Samuel Moor b.1748 in Rutland Mass. d.8 Aug. 1822 in Chester Center, Mass. Seven children.

Molly Elder of Murryfield, Mass.d.6 May 1817 buried in Chester Center Cemetery. married to William Moor b.7 Mar 1743-4 in Rutland, Mass. d.3 Jul. 1816 buried in Chester Center Cemetery. No known children.

Thomas Elder d.6 Jan. 1814 buried in Chester Center, Mass. married 26 Nov. 1772 in Rutland, Mass. to Margaret Moor b.1750 in Rutland, Mass. d.22 Oct.1786 buried in Chester Center, Mass. This family had children named Elder. Thomas Elder b.12 June.1774.
Samuel Elder b.5 May 1776.
Kate Elder b.9 Apr.1778.
James Elder b.30 Jan. 1780.
Charlotte Elder b.27 Jan. 1782.
John Elder b. 9 Mar. 1784.

Any help in confirmation of this information would be appreciated. It has been fun and I almost feel like an ELDER now.

Thank you.....Chuck--

Hi to all--

Hope everything is going well.

I saw the below-listed query in The Gen. Helper, Sept--Oct 1995. Since the submitter lives nearby, I discussed the Elder News Sharing List with her, and said that I would input her query therein. The submitter is Ruth Baughan Zych, 1710 Belle Meade Road, Encinitas, CA 92024-4209. Hopefully some one will be able to help her.
