Hi Jo,

The following is from the book "Genealogy of the Elder Clan" by Lee M.
Elder, 1636 Utah Ave, San Angelo, TX 76904-7147:

[in addition to what you already have] it says "Chesley was a farmer in
Dist. 22 of Greene Co, before the Civil War. On 8-5-1863 he enlised in the
confederate army and served in G Co, 14th TN Infantry. His allegiance
changed, however, and on 12-27-1864 at City Point, VA, he signed an oath to
the United States. He was granted amnesty and furnished transportation
back to Greene Co. In his service record he is described as being 5'7" and
having brown hair, blue eyes and dark complexion."

Lee "speculates" that Chesley's father was Peter and wife Leatha. He also
speculate that Peter was the son of an Ephraim ELDER, and wife Sarah
(Sally) Ephraim was in the Rev. War. and in 1830 Ephraim and Peter were in
Spartanburg Co SC. At that time Ephraim was age 60-70 and Peter age 20-30.

If this line proves out then your line would go right along with the other
connected to the Peter ELDER of Virginia line.

I don't have a single confederate ancestor - only have a few of my
ancestor's siblings who fought for the south. So I don't have much
experience with their records. But still there might be a pension for
Chesley at the National Archives (and surely would be a military record)
in case you haven't checked into that.

Donna and Jim,

Thanks for all of the great work you've done over the weekend
digging my roots! How can I go back further? Donna indicated that the
Clarion group may have some info that would be helpful. Is this info
contained in back issues of EFN? In order to get the back issues, do
I first need to become a member?

Dear Donna,

I ran across some notes that might pertain to the second query.

PARRISH RECORD 1672-1801
North Farnham Parish
Richmond County, VA

born August 16, 1756:
"Silvester, bastard child of Mary Elder"

Is this the same Mary who married John Hammond? Is it also the same
Sylvester mentioned in the query?
I would appreciate someone getting back with me and letting me know if there is a tie.
Thanks!

John Elder and his wife Anne were in Richmond County, Virginia in
the early 1700s and seemed to have lived in the same parish as William Elder
and his wife Ann. He had three daughters; Ruth, b. 19 May 1730 in North
Farnham Parish, Lucy, b. sometime after 1730, Mary, b. sometime after 1730.
John seems to be younger than William or, at least, married somewhat later
than William. What is the relationship of John Elder to William Elder?

Thanks,

I am descended from Samuel ELDER (-1844) and Jane MORTIMER (1817-). They

Great-great grandparents on my mother's side.

Samuel and Jane Elder lived in the Clarion Co PA area
and gave birth to my great grandfather John Elder
(1861-1922). John married Mary Barbara SOMERVILLE (1865-1940). They
are both buried in Clarion Co. Pennsylvania. There son Clarence M.

In your studies have you come across this branch of the Elder's?
Can you give me a lead, back from them?

Subject: Eliza Jane Elder

Dear Elder Researchers:

Perhaps you can help me find the family of Eliza Jane Elder.

My husband's great-grandmother, Sarah Martha Gartin, was the daughter of
Uriah Gartin (sometimes called Richard Gartin) and his wife, Eliza Jane
Elder. Eliza Jane Elder was born ca.1829 in Kentucky, according to the
1850 and 1860 Marion County census records. She and her husband lived in
Bradfordsville, Marion County, Kentucky. She presumably died before 1880,
because she was not listed in that census. We do not know her parents'
names.

This morning I went to the local branch of the National Archives and looked
up all the Elder families living in Kentucky in 1830. There were twelve of
them who had a female under five years of age listed as living in the
household. Here is my question. Are any of the following Elders in the
Elder line that you are researching? Are there any families where you know
definitely that there was no Eliza Jane born approximately 1829? Even
better, do you know that one of these families did have a daughter Eliza
Jane? We do know that Sylvester Elder had a daughter Eliza Jane of
approximately the right age, but she apparently married someone named
William Thomas Bickett.

I haven't looked through the old issues of the newsletter but am wondering
if you've considered this line as a potential for your Robert's parents. I
am not sure how much of this has been "proved" but might be worth looking
into (certainly would fit with the birth year you've given above. And other

Hi Donna,

I just finished browsing The Genealogical Helper and did I ever find
The Elder Newsletter mentioned. Was it three or four times?

I sent a query to the elder-news network several days ago on John
Elder and his wife Anne in North Farnham Parish, Richmond County, Virginia
and have not had any replies. I thought it might be a good query for the
next newsletter as I am becoming more interesting in finding who this John
Elder was. It's hard to believe that no one has done any work on his
family. What do you think?

John and Anne had three daughters that I know of. They may have had
other children and probably moved from Richmond County. One of his
daughters, Mary, I have pegged to be the mother of the illegimate Sylvester
Elder.

Best regards,

Jim

I hope so since I pay for all those mentions....I don't have that
issue yet so haven't seen it. Genealogical Helper used to put a lot of
things in the magazine free, but not anymore, they charge for just about
everything. But it helps lots of our members since nearly everyone who is
just starting out researching ususally checks it for common surnames.

And if they got it right this time I'll be amazed as they have messed up on
nearly all of the ads I have given them for the past two years. Either they
forget to put it in or they have referenced it in the index to the wrong
page...etc.

On the other hand Heritage Quest has done a terrific job with the ads I
have given them and they are a LOT less expensive. It runs several hundred
dollars for the ads in Gen. Helper each where as Heritage Quest is about
half as much.

Sure your query will be in the newsletter - it's best to put lots
of details in these queries since you never know what little piece of data
will trigger a memory for others. Such as the Sylvester below... this
isn't a very common name in any of the Elder lines (as opposed to Robert or
John) so when it shows up more than once ... it's at least a clue.
Siblings and spouses and dates and all areas where they are known to have
lived is really important.

If someone has researched for their family in a certain area, let's
say Clarke County Georgia. Many of them get all the ELDER records for that
area in the hopes of one day putting the missing pieces together. So they
just might have a piece of your puzzle if you mention a particular area.

Subject: Surname Elder

Elder is a comparatively rare name, and appears to be characteristic in
origin. Research indicates it can be associated with the English, meaning, an
"older man". There are various spellings of the surname ELDER- they are:
ELDERS, ELDAR, ELDARE. Also, Elder is part of the CLAN MACKINTOSH. The name
Elder derives from the elder of two sharing the same forename. A sept of Clan
Chattan of which the Mackintoshes are chiefs. John Elder was a burgess in
Edinburg in 1423.
THE ELDER COAT OF ARMS: The earliest coat of arms for Elder is discribed as
follows, and became unique to an early Elder: "Ar. a fess wreathed gu. and
vert betw. two mullets of the second in chief and a dolphin hauriant az. in
base". When translated, the blazon also describes the original colors of the
Elder Coat of Arms as "Silver, a horizontal band wreathed red and green
between two red five pointed stars on top and a blue dolphin place vertically
in base". Above the shield and helmet is the crest which is discribed as:"A
right hand holding a roll of paper naturally colored".
The meaning of the colors in the Coat of Arms are: Silver-reprents serenity
and nobility
Red-represents fortitude and creative power
Green-means hope, vitality, and plenty.
The motto for the Elder Coat of Arms is:"Virtute Duce".
I hope this helps some "Cousins"
