Subject: Elder, Mary
We are still looking for information about Mary Jane ELDER (@1842, TN-1930 Lawrence Co, AR), her siblings and ancestry. We know nothing about her parents and siblings. We know a lot about her descendants as she is Steve's paternal Great-great-grandparents
I was able to get a copy of the index for the 1850 TN census (at which time our Mary Jane would have been about 8 years old.)
The following are entries which MIGHT include her. I hope that some of you might help provide me with further information about these families which will help me know which avenue to next pursue.
(Possible mention in 1850 TN Census for Mary Jane might be hidden here):
1. David ELDER 35, Matilda 35, James 10, George 7, Mary , William 4,
Thomas 3, Lucey 1, Va.Va, Gi 48-621 or
2. Robert ELDER, 70, Mary 40, William 17, Sarah Ann15, Emaline 14,
Mahala7, Clarissa 5, Amanda 3, Martha 1, VA,VA, Me-432-768 or
3. William ELDER 34, Mary A. 28, Andrew W., 9, Mary A. 7, Elizabeth
P. 3, Ja?e 1, AL, AL, Ms 513-126 (Realize this has wrong middle initial,
but have seen such turn out to be the same person) or
4. Priest ELDERS 38, Moses 14, Louisa 13, Mary 9, Wm 1 TT Bo-345-51)
(On the surface, this latter looks like it fits best, but also, I don't know the identity of any of these counties--anybody able to tell me Gi, Me, Ms, and TT for TN?)
My Mary Jane ELDER @ 1857 in Lawrence Co, AR m George W. SNOW (12 Jun 1836, Hamilton Co, TN-28 Sep 1876, Tiptonville, Lake Co, TN, bur Cronansville Cem) George and Mary were married about 1857, but we have not found documentation of the marriage. We suspect it was either in eastern TN or one of the states bordering that area.
(In 1850 TN census: William 42, Mary 36, George 15, Elizabeth 13, Sarah 9, James 8, Tennessee4, James RAY 10, NC,T H-1210-907)
My Mary Jane ELDER married, soon after George's death in 1876, Bill BOTTOM. We suspect this to be William Y. BOTTOMS (@1857, TN-), a brother of Steve's maternal great-grandfather. (On the 1880 AR, Lawrence Co, Campbell Twp, p 111 #140/145 is a Wm BOTTOMS, farm Laborer, born in TN with parents both b in TN--probably also the same person)
Can anyone recogize this missing lady? Maybe she or her family is in your Elder family records.

Dear List,
Antipodean Greetings!
I am researching several probably linked lines of Elder in Scotland pre 1700 - 1900 to determine how and if they are related. I would be pleased to hear from anyone interested in the following people and their ancestors and descendants.
1) My immediate line begins with an ALEXANDER ELDER Farmer, Avoch near Rosmarkie
His son was JOHN ELDER Farmer 1767?- d1822, married JANE AIRD 1772 -1850 and lived initially at the farm Corslate near Rosmarkie. Their children include Ann 1806, Donald 1808, Andrew 1810, Jane 1812, Elizabeth 1815, KENNETH (Leitch) ELDER 1817, Isabel 1819, Johanna 1822.
KENNETH ELDER 1817 - 1860 Flax Mill Overseer/Commercial Clerk, my great-great- grandfather, married MARY HIRD 1830-1862 in Montrose and they had several children who died in infancy with only my great-grandfather WILLIAM HIRD ELDER 1851-1915 surviving. In 1870 he moved to London, married Charlotte Matilda Berrie of Inverkeithing (nr Edinburgh) in 1873 and in 1895 moved to Liverpool with his four sons who survived, and other children. He was an East India Merchant.
I know the subsequent lineage completely through WILLIAM HIRD ELDER's sons including CHARLES BRUCE ELDER, my grandfather and KATHLEEN ELSA ELDER, my mother. I am interested in collateral lines at any level of the family tree and the ancestry of Alexander Elder.
2) An allegedly linked line is that of THOMAS ELDER 1737-1799 Lord Provost of Edinburgh and Postmaster General of Scotland, former wine merchant who married Elizabeth Man. They had one son WILLIAM ELDER and their eldest of 4 daughters, Isabella, married the Principal of Edinburgh University, George Husband Baird 1761-1840. This line begins with William Elder Engineer in 17th century, then Alexander Elder of Forres near Inverness, his son William Elder of Loaning near Pitlochry b ca 1710 to 1780 at least, father of Thomas above and of Charles 1749-1823. Charles was in the Royal Navy and taken prisoner by the Americans in 1777 for 13 months with an address at Rhode Island. Later appointed to Lord Howe's flagship *The Eagle* and in action against the French off Rhode Island in 1778. I would be interested to hear from anyone who knows more about the origin of Alexander Elder in this line, and about any collateral lines.
3) I am also interested in the origin of the great Australian pastoralist line of Elders which we have traced back through the founder of Elders IXL, George Elder 1785-1868 of Kirkcaldy, Scotland, whose father was William Elder 1755-1846 a glover of Leith who married Agnes Bain 17??-1832 in 1782. It is understood that this line is linked to that of 2) above but the manner is not known. We have an extensive descendant tree for this line.
4) I have a rather garbled and certainly unreliable tree for the link between lines 2) & 3) above which mixes generations and has other confusions. This tree includes mention of several SKYE Elders circa 1800. It also links Alexander Elder of Forres to a brother GEORGE ELDER who went to America and was never heard of again. This would have to be in the late 1600s. The parents of Alexander and George are said to be Rodorick Elder and Christain McCuin (sic) and Rodorick's parents to be Rodorick Elder and Christian McDonald.

My name is Leda E. Behseresht but I am actually subscribing for a friend of mine. He name is Mara Lynn Elder.
Mara's line is as follows:

Mara gave me a pedigree chart with this information, but it doesn't have any documentation. This is why I've subscribed. I'd like to get the documentation for her. (Her parents divorced when she was an infant and she was latter adopted by her stepfather. She has taken the Elder name back, but it's difficult for her to do her own Elder research...she's in daily contact with her mother.)
If you are accepting third-party researchers on the Web page, I would be interested.
Your ELDER Web pages are wonderful. Thank you.

Hi Donna,
Sorry for my non-participation. I did some genealogy research before my daughter was born. I joined mainly to see if I could learn anything new casually.
In answer to your questions:
1) Karen Jean McDonald Crawford
My Elder lineage is:
Sharon Jean Marshall (my mother)
Robert Dixson Marshall III (my gfather)
Mary Moore Elder (my ggmother)
Thomas Elder (my gggfather)
Thomas Elder is of the Paxtang Elders of Penn. He was the founder of Elder's (now Elder-Berman) department store chain in Dayton, Ohio. He had a copy of the book, Pennsylvania Genealogies, with his lines marked so I have a lot of data.
2) kcraw@tridom.com
3) Elders of Paxtang, Penn.
4) Yes
5) I am particularly interested in some of the side lines from the Elders, like the Jarretts. Tacie Elizabeth Jarrett of Penn. married Thomas Elder.
Thanks for your efforts. The Internet is a great resource for communication between researchers.

I think I'm shifting my BARNES research to Allegany Co., MD. That's where my Richard Weaver was in 1810, according to the Census. Maybe that's where he died. I just had a guy, today, from MO get in touch with me, he has WORLEY and CESSNA lines, so I've been busy this evening putting stuff together for him. Do you suppose that 6-8 generations of ancestors will make him happy????? If we could only find something like that for George and Sarah - maybe someday.
Take care.

Hi, Donna.
Sorry to be so long getting this reply to you. Here are the items you requested:
1. My full name is Dwight C. Stewart
2. My e-mail address is: DCStewartLou@worldnet.att.net
3. I'm researching Elders in Paxtang, Lancaster/Dauphin Co., Pennsylvania
in the 1700's and am particularly interested in the possibility that Robert
Elder, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Mary (Patterson) Elder is the Robert
Elder who moved to Clark County, Ohio in 1813. That line, including the
Robert Elder of Ohio, is the one I'm interested in.
4. Yes, I'd be glad for this information to be posted on the Elder web page.
5. I'd especially like information related to the Susanna Elder (daughter
of Robert and Ann [Ingram] Elder) who, I think, married Charles Stewart.
I'd appreciate confirmation or disconfirmation of this. And if anyone has
any information about that Charles Stewart's siblings or parents, I would
especially, *especially*, appreciate being given that information. Thanks,
Donna, for all your help.
Sincerely yours,
Dwight C. Stewart

Name: Harold Wayne Elder
E-Mail address: helder@alston.cba.ua.edu
Areas of research: Arkansas, Kentucky(Madison County), and other southeastern states; time period: approx. 1850 and earlier. I am trying to trace back from my ancestor Andrew Presley Elder, who lived in Arkansas. I believe his father was also named Andrew Elder, and lived in Madison County, Kentucky during the early part of the 19th century. I would like to work back from this point, but have no current information about how to proceed, but have seen postings on the Sharing list that implies that others have a commond ancestry with the earlier Andrew Elder.
I would also like to have any information on the use by Elder ancestors of the motto "Valentine and Dragon" which is on a family artifact that I have (datingfrom the 1770's).
I would be happy to have this information posted on the Elder News Web Page.
I will also soon be joining the group to receive your newsletter (and pay my share) that you publish.
Thanks,
Harold

My name is Ronald I Elder. I am descended from a David Elder for whom the
only date we have is his marriage to Hannah Jamieson in Linlithgow, Scotland
in 1788. His occupation was listed as Master Cooper and we believe that
he went to Linlithgow for work in one of the distilleries there. We have
not yet discovered his birthplace.
His son, also David Elder and my Gt-Gt-Grandfather, had planned to emigrate
to New Zealand but died in 1862 in Raploch - then a small village but now
a suburb of Stirling, Scotland. He and his wife Jessie Robertson are buried
in Stirling together with one of their daughters Jane Kerr Elder. All of
the survivng family members emigrated and became established in New Zealand
in the mid-1860's. We have good records from that time.
Our best clue to the origins of the family come from the links with Stirling.
David Elder had spent most of his working life as an Inspector of Fisheries
in the Orkney Islands and in other fishing ports on the East Coast of Scotland.
However, when he retired in ill-health he went to the Stirling area and
died in the home of a woman we believe may have been a cousin - her father
was a Thomas Elder, born in 1774 in Port of Menteith,Perthshire, Scotland
(14 miles away). We know also of a son of David Elder's, William, whose
success in Veterinary studies at Edinburgh University was recorded in the
local Stirling newspaper, which serves to strenghten the possibility of
a family connection in the area.
Any help from others researching family connections in the Stirlingshire
or Perthshire areas would be welcomed.
