Subject: In My Own Backyard!

My birthday was July 5th.... and on this special day my cousin, Laura, called me to offer her best wishes. It's important to note here that Laura and I are first cousins in that our fathers are brothers. I was raised in the North (such that Maryland is North???) and Laura was raised in the South (Tuscaloosa AL!). But over the years we have always stayed in touch as we feel a special connection being born within weeks of each other.

Over the years, Laura has really enjoyed my genealogy work and all the "finds" I've made on our common ancestry. But the biggest find was yet to come. In our conversation the other night she mentioned that since I had done most of "our" father's lines, she had gone to work on her mother's ancestors. Imagine my surprise when I asked her what some of the SURNAMES were.... you guessed it...ELDER.

So I asked her how far back she could go on her Elder line....and here's what she gave me:

Lucy Jane ELDER, b 1831, m John Thomas McKoy and they resided in Cowata co, GA.
d/o "Big" John Lewis ELDER, b 1807 and resided in GA as well (unclear as to Cowata or Clark Co)

s/o Joshua ELDER

s/o Joseph ELDER

So it appears that my dear cousin Laura is a descendant of the Peter Elder line of Elders from Virginia. I have asked Laura to send me some of the documentation she has on her line and any other descendants. Hopefully others will have something to share with her.

Maybe I should be bugging all my first cousins for their other lines as you never know what you'll find "in your own backyard!"

Hi to all.

I have 3 KY books that contain ELDER names and related info. These books are: (1) Kentucky Marriages, 1797-1865 (but the info is no way complete), (2) Kentuckians in Illinois, and (3) Kentucky Pioneers and Their Descendants. I'll be glad to share this info.

I also have a copy of CD002, which contains Marriage Records for 5 states, including KY. I found a Frances ELDER md Patterson ELDER on 4 Dec 1820 in Mercer Co., KY

Regards, Sandy

Mary Ellen, do you know if your Robert ELDER (b.1788 in Scotland) had a brother named Samuel? I'm looking for Samuel ELDER, supposedly of Scotch origin, who was born in about 1790. He shows up on the Seneca County, OH census in 1830 and 1840, and in Whitley County, IN in 1860 and 1870. His estate was probated in Whitley County, IN in 1881.

Gary, I don't think I am much help with your Samuel ELDER. My Robert is one of my dead ends. I know that he was born in Scotland in 1788, but I have no info on his family. He did have a son named Samuel, born in 1822. This son, Samuel, and his sister, Nancy Jane married a sister and brother of the Tearman family, Elizabeth Jane and John Wilson. These folks lived in Johnson County Indiana which is quite a distance south of Whitley county. This is probably more than you would like to know, considering it doesn't seem like a match. It was fun to hear from you.

Subject: Randolph County NC Elders

The following is from Mary Cole's research (she is offline temp. due to a hard disk crash - hope she's back up soon!)

(Source: North Carolina Vol. 1 1993) pub. by the Randolph County Heritage book committee:

"Robert and Eleanor were the founders of the Elder family in America......[goes on with much from Egle's "Pennsylvania Genealogies" with information about Robert and Eleanor's family]
"The census of 1790 lists only two heads of families in Randolph County by the name of Elder, John Elder and James Elder. John is accredited with four boys under sixteen years old and two females, including the female head. The household of James at that time consisted of himself and one female, supposed to be his wife.
"According to a letter written some years ago by William Nease Elder, the parents of John and James Elder came to Randolph County from Pennsylvania. This letter states that their mother, Elizabeth Elder, died about 1780 and was a widow, but does not mention the name of their father. William Nease Elder, Thomas Julian Redding's grandfather who lives on Archdale Road, was born Nov. 3, 1910.
"A careful search for a marriage record of an Elder in Pennsylvania to someone by the name of Elizabeth revealed that on March 5, 1759, in Philadelphia, one James Elder was married to Elizabeth Maipes. This couple is supposed to be the parents of John and James.
"William Nease Elder's grandson, Carl Elder Spencer, was employed at the Salisbury Post, and was the author of "Odd Facts in Carolina." He died on March 10, 1988, and was buried at Oakwood Cemetery in High Point, North Carolina." -- authored by Bertie Robbins Redding.

A picture below this bio. shows a tombstone with the caption "Double tombstone of Richard Elder and Martha Coltrane Elder located in Veech Cemetery, Red River County, Texas." [does anyone know where this Richard fits into this family?]

*******
Additional data (from Mary Cole):

FACT RELEVANT TO James and Elizabeth (Maipes) Elder --
- m Swedes Church, Phila. 5 Mar 1759
- Elizabeth died before James
- Elizabeth died in PA
- both James and Elizabeth stayed in PA until their deaths and never went to NC.
- 1762 resided Fannet, Cumberland Co, PA (later Franklin Co)
- 1780 taxed on 200 acres (Fannet)
- 1785 James and Elizabeth (Franklin Co deed book 1, page 212) gave their land and items to son-in-law Robert KERR (married to dau. Agnes, b 17 Mar 1763)
- Elizabeth (Maipes) Elder d 17 Jul 1816 (aged ca 106) - James Elder d 13 Aug 1818 (aged ca 102) - Agnes (Elder) Kerr obit states both parents lived to be over 100

Can anyone shed any light on the parent of the Randolph County family?

Subject: Robert Elder/Jackson County, Ohio
From: gmorrison@pipeline.com (Gary Morrison)

When I joined the Elder Family Newsgroup I had only been able to trace my Elder roots back to my gg grandfather Alexander Johnson Elder, born 1828 somewhere in Ohio. Through obituaries and other means I traced him to Jackson County, Ohio in the mid-1800's and his parent's Robert and Rachel Elder. By 1860 Alexander and his family were in Jefferson County, Iowa and Robert and Rachel and family were in neighboring Wapello County, Iowa. I notice three Elder Family cousins with Robert and Mary Elder ancestors in Jackson County, Ohio. Since I could find only one Elder family in Jackson County in 1850, could there be any connection between Robert/Mary and Robert/Rachel? Anyone who can respond, please help.
Thank you.

Well Gary,

I promised that if you'd post this to the Sharing List I would get back to you tonight ... and you did so I will keep my promise.... it's 11:08 as I start this and let's hope I get it typed up before midnight!

[but please note that I would appreciate a copy of the "obit and other means" you spoke of as it might give us some clues to help others working on lines in this area of Ohio]

First of all we have a Robert ELDER who in 1825 purchased abt 98 acres in Jackson County OHIO. At the time of this purchase though Robert was "of" Gallia County OHIO.

Robert ELDER, b abt 1769; d 30 Nov 1835 Jackson Co OH; buried Bundy/Bunday? Cemetery, Wellston, OH. Wife: Mary.

Robert ELDER's will dated 30 Sept 1835 (Will bk A pp 23,24 Jackson County, OH); proved 18 Apr 1836 offers the following data:

Robert (the deceased) was living in Clinton Twp, Jackson Co, OH wife (survived him) was Mary
Named children (in order named in will):
Anna Shreck, wife of Garret SHRECK
Thomas ELDER
Isabel Exline, wife of Daniel *EXLINE
Mary Anthony, wife of Nicholas ANTHONY
Elizabeth Westfall, wife of Eli WESTFALL Jane Phillips, wife of Robert PHILLIPS
Robert ELDER
Lydia Stephens, wife of Benjamin STEPHENS Margaret Anderson, wife of James ANDERSON Nancy A. ELDER
Cornelius D.[Dempsey] ELDER
Sarah ELDER
Witnesses: Patrick SHEARER, James DEMPSEY Land (80 acres) given to daughter Elizabeth Westfall and her husband Eli.

(*Exline surname has also been spelled Axline in some research I have done in Maryland and Virginia-DYL)

>From members of our newsletter: Cornelius D. m Sarah HUESTON/HOUSTON and
Sarah m Zachariah STEPHENS. The SHRECK's moved to Milo, Delaware Co, IA.

It is believed that this line come out of Northumberland Co, PA:
1790 Census Northumberland Co, PA page 184 1755-1855 Annals of Buffalo Valley, PA , pages 270 & 332 1800 census East Buffalo Twp, Northumberland Co, PA pg 718 1810 census of East Buffalo Twp, Northumberland Co, PA 1830 census of Clinton, Jackson Co, OH

Note: Buffalo Twp, became part of Union Co PA in 1813

Interestingly there is nothing in these members files on either Thomas or Robert... elusive males (that's a switch!)

Another correspondent says that this Elder family attended Presbyterian Church in East Buffalo Twp, Northumberland, Co, PA.

- hope some of this helps

donna (it's 11:58 - I made it! yeah!)

Subject: Robert Elders in Jackson County, Ohio
From: gmorrison@pipeline.com (Gary Morrison)

In response to my query of this weekend regarding Robert Elder in Jackson County, Ohio I received a response detailing Robert and Mary Elder from Jackson County in the early to mid-1800's. We could not ascertain from that whether there was a definitive connection with my Robert and Rachel Elder found in Jackson County in 1850. The Ohio material I have access to is limited, therefore what I have at this point is a set of logical linkages. What I surmise to by my Elder line:
* Robert Elder m Rachel
* Alexander Johnson Elder m Marcia Jane Baker
George R. Elder
Lawrence Robert Elder
* Benjamin Baker Elder
Lucy Elder
Clarissa J. Elder
William A. Elder
Luella Elder
Lineas Elder
Martha Elder
Nancy Elder
Eliza J. Elder
Clarrissa Elder

* My direct line ancestors.

I am still looking for more concrete evidence, but here is what I have:

1. Clarissa J. Elder obituary -
Clara Jane Maines
Clara Jane Elder was born December 12, 1859, to Alexander and Marcia Elder in Jackson county, Ohio. She was united in marriage to Finley Maines on July 3rd, 1878, at her parents home in Davis county. To this union were born seven children, George and Clyde having passed on.
Those left to mourn their loss are the aged companion, two sons, Edward and Charlie Maines and Annie Steen of Washington State, and Guy and Clay Maines of Drakesville, also fifteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren, besides a host of other relatives and friends. She was of a family of seven children of whom just two are left. They are Wm. Elder of Blakesburg, Iowa, and Ella Ginnett of Burlington, Washington. She had been in ill health for several years but had only been bedfast a week when she departed this life Saturday, Oct. 9th, 1943, at 9:15 a. m. at the age of 83 years, 9 months and 27 days. She will be sadly missed by everyone.
They had enjoyed 65 years of happy married life. They have several grandsons serving their country who are unable to be here. Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church at Drakes-ville at 2:30 on the 12th by Rev. Arthur Stookesberry, of Bloomfield. Interment was made in the Breeding cemetery.

Copied from obituary appearing in October 19, 1943 Davis County Republican newspaper, page 5.

2. 1850 Ohio census shows only one Elder in Jackson County. Robert and Rachel are both born in Pennsylvania which is consistent with later census records of Alexander.

3. 1850 Ohio census shows a Benjamin Baker family in neighboring Jackson Township, Jackson County. This Alexander's wife's family. His wife was Marcia Jane Baker and her obituary states she married Alexander in Ohio in 1850. I had not been able to trace her family in Ohio because there are literally hundreds of Bakers in Ohio. I got to her family through locating Robert/Rachel. This is her family because Lutia is Benjamin's wife and Lutia shows up in Alexander's household in the late 1800's and is identified as mother-in-law. In addition, her birthplace (NY) and age are consistent matches in all census'. By the way, Alexander and Marcia's second son (my g grandfather) was Benjamin Baker Elder. He may have been born around the time that Benjamin died and the name was in his honor. I am still trying to establish this.

4. The 1860 Iowa census shows Robert/Rachel Elder family and Alexander/Marcia Elder family within a few short miles of each other in adjoining counties. Robert was in Wapello County and Alexander was in Jefferson County.

I feel I am on pretty solid ground, but obviously verification still is required. I am going to try later this week locating Robert's burial location in Iowa, then his death date, and then an obituary to see if I can identify ancestors. I am quite confident this Robert is the Robert who was son of Robert and Mary Elder of Jackson County.

If this information strikes a chord with anyone let's communicate. I can provide some information on the Robert/Rachel and Alexander/Marcia line and would like to hear of more information on the other Elders from Jackson County.

They were married (where?) in 1790 and had children: Robert, Sarah, Mary, John Nesbit, Ann, James, Polly Taylor, Nancy T., and Joshua David. I would appreciate having more data on this family.
