I am interested in learning more about my branch of the Elder family and wonder if anyone has information that would help me. I have my grandfather's research - Edwin Ingram Elder - which documents our line back through Giles County to Virginia as far back as Tilman Elder b. 1778 in VA (possibly Lunenburg, County) m. 1798 to Mary Walker in Mecklenburg County, VA d. 1830 in Giles County and is buried at the Elder Family Cemetery in Prospect. His children were Mary Elder, Nancy Elder, Roberta Elder, Jane Elder, David Elder (my great, great, great grandfather) and Hartwell Elder. I really don't know much more about him except what I read on "familytrail.com". I don't know how accurate their information is, but it traces Tilman all the way back to Peter Elder. Does anyone have any information on this branch of the Elder family? Thank you.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the contact and registration on the ELDER Bulletin Board.

Looking in Lee ELDER's "PETER ELDER" genealogy book,
a computer print-out revised Jan 2000,
I see a Tilman ELDER on page 44
(b. 1770, m. 1798 in Mecklenburg Co, VA)
and his father Thomas ELDER ( b. 1721 Richmond VA),
listed on page 43.
"He had 200 acres in Dinwiddie Co VA."

Findagrave - ELDER CEMETERY, Prospect, Giles Co TN
Tilman Elder, b. 1778 VA - d. 1830 Giles Co TN

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=elder&GSfn=tilman&GSbyrel=all&GSdy=1830&GSdyrel=in&GSst=45&GScnty=2452&GScntry=4&GSob=n&GRid=60535349&df=all&

I have forwarded your query to Bob ELDER, who has
documents for "PETER ELDER" family posted on his website:

It's highly likely that Tilman Elder was a descendant of Peter Elder of Old Rappahannock County, Virginia. However, proving the path of descent is challenging (perhaps impossible), because most of Peter's descendants moved to Prince George (later Dinwiddie) County, Virginia. "The ravages of Benedict Arnold, Banastre Tarleton, Grant's Armies of the James and Potomac, and fire unfortunately destroyed most of the records of Dinwiddie, Prince George and Charles City Counties prior to 1835." [Jones, Dinwiddie County, 1976, page 315]. Most of the Dinwiddie data I've found is reported on this web page:
http://www.peterelderva.info/misc/dinwiddie_elders_data.html

Father of Tilman Elder
1. Thomas Elder?

Some (including Lee Elder) have given Tilman Elder's father as the Thomas Elder who was born in 1721 to William and Ann Elder in Richmond County, Virginia. I've seen no documentation to support the Thomas-Tilman connection. There was a Thomas Elder with 200 acres in Dinwiddie County Land Tax records from 1782 to 1830: the 1830 Census gives his age as 80-89 [Page 407, NARA Roll M19-196]; his 1831 will names 12 children not including Tilman [http://www.mindspring.com/~kelder/KenElder/elderhis.html ]. Thomas Elder (born 1721) inherited 200 acres in Dinwiddie County from his father William, but the Thomas who died in 1831 is too young to be the one born in 1721 - possibly his son.

2. William Elder?

Dennis Elder [http://genforum.genealogy.com/elder/messages/1011.html ] has pointed out that Tilman Elder resided with William Elder in Dinwiddie County in 1789-1791 according to Personal Property Tax records. Tilman was above 16 in 1789, so born by 1773 (not 1778, as the non-contemporary grave marker shown on findagrave.com states). Binns Genealogy has an image of the 1790 tax record [http://www.binnsgenealogy.com/VirginiaTaxListCensuses/Dinwiddie/1790PersonalB/06.jpg ]. Dennis gives information on William Elder based on Virginia tax and death records. The death record he cites for Harrison James Elder can be found on FamilySearch.org under H. J. Elder in Virginia.

3. Samuel Elder?

Since Tilman Elder married in Mecklenburg County in 1798, I checked for other contemporary Elders in that county. The only one I've found is Samuel Elder. He bought 100 acres in 1778 [Mecklenburg County, Virginia, Deed Book 5, page 324], but he and wife Patience sold that land in 1779 [Mecklenburg County, Virginia, Deed Book 6, page 18]. Samuel and Patience Elder moved to Spartanburg County, South Carolina, where (for example) they sold land in 1794 [Spartanburg County, South Carolina, Deed Book F, pages 267-269]. Peter and Amadine Hammond Elder had a son Samuel in Richmond County, Virginia, in 1738; they had moved to Dinwiddie County by 1759 [http://www.peterelderva.info/notes/elder_notes/elder_notes_gen4/elder_children_notes_gen4.html ].

Hi Bob,
Thanks for the help!
This information should be helpful to others with early "PETER ELDER" queries, too.

Thank you for the information. I have also learned that Tilman fought in the War of 1812, and moved his family to Giles Co shortly afterward. Apparently, Giles Co belonged to the native Americans until the war ended. I have also learned that Tilman married Elizabeth Walker the daughter of David Walker. I wonder if this new info could help to find definitive information as to who his father was?

If not, are any of the DNA projects suitable to prove Tilman was from Peter Elder's line?

Thanks again,

Jim

Could we find a current Tilman descendant male named ELDER?
If so, we can match his DNA with our other descendants of "PETER ELDER."
I have found current descendants from books about my
Rev. War Soldier, Robert ELDER (1730-1807) of Franklin Co PA,
to match my brother's DNA (kit #10042), so most anything is possible!!

Hi Nancy, this is very exciting indeed! Just to verify I am 100% sure that I am descended from Tilman Elder and want to know if Tilman comes from the Peter Elder line. So if I do the DNA testing, that would be conclusive one way or the other, right? Thanks, Jim

Hi Jim,
Yes, we now have 9 exact matches for the "Peter ELDER" line,
so we know that the first Y-DNA-12 marker test is significant to show a
match.
It's an easy mouth-swab test, and takes about 4 weeks to report via
e-mail after the lab receives the kit.
All you have to fill out on the online order "JOIN REQUEST" is your full name,
US Mail address and e-mail. The order goes through quicker
if you use their online credit-card payment, but you can ask for a
mail invoice.
Let me know if you have any questions.
E-mail me anytime!

Hi Nancy Elder Peterson and Bob Elder, and many thanks to you both. I am realizing that it was me who posted the Tilman Elder question a year ago and that I didn't acknowledge you or Bob after your generous feedback. Please accept my sincere apology. After registering for the site and leaving my question, I lost track of the site and didn't see your responses until I stumbled back onto it a few days ago. Tilman would surely be disappointed with my lack of manners. Rest assured that I have bookmarked the site, so it doesn't happen again. You are both so generous to give of your time to help our family members learn more about where we came from. I have many questions stemming from the information Bob posted, and I want to participate in the DNA project. Can we schedule a phone conversation? Thank you again, Jim Elder, Jr.
