"Matthew was the son of Elias Dorsey and Susannah Organ.
" M Dorsey, resident of Putnam County, moved with Jane to Houston County in early pioneer days where he established a tavern on the old stage road at the present site of Fort Valley. remained there until Stewart County was organized. The HISTORY OF PEACH COUNTY,GA says Matthew was one of the first settlers of what became Fort Valley. He subscribed 5 shares of Southeastern Railroad stock around 1850. With James A. Everett, he donated 6 acres of land for school and church purposes--sometime before 1848. He was a trustee of the Fort Valley Female Seminary when it was chartered in 1852. 1st United Methodist
church built on the land in 1848, Dorsey was a member. As the first postmaster he was given the honor of naming the town. He submitted the name "Fox Valley", but had very bad handwriting. He was married to (1) Jane McMichael and (2) Mariah Jones. He had five known children.
