Former Chino High School coach, educator dies at 93

CHINO - Influential high school coach Frank M. Elder, a teacher and role model in the Chino community for many decades, has died at the age of 93.

The stellar athlete and devoted educator brought hundreds of victories to many Chino High School sports teams and is especially remembered for winning the hearts of all those he mentored.

"He was an influential man," said former Chino High basketball player Joe Murillo. "I always thought he walked on water."

Elder died Oct. 26 in his Rancho Cucamonga home from heart failure.

Family members, friends and former students described Elder as a gracious, supportive and inspiring man.

"Every time he spoke, I listened. There was always great wisdom in his words," Murillo said. "I almost adopted him as a second father."

Murillo, who graduated from Chino High School in 1965, is now a teacher and basketball coach at his alma mater, leading a life partly inspired by Elder.

He is not alone following in the coach's footsteps. Elder's son, Robert Elder, is also a teacher at Chino High and replaced his father as the basketball coach when he retired.

"When I was old enough to walk, I was sitting on the bench of his games," Robert Elder recalled.

Elder is remembered for loving life while complaining little.

"He went blind about 20 years ago and he laughed about it," Robert Elder said. "Life was great, and he pushed it to the hilt."

Elder was born in Chapel Hill, Tenn., and moved to La Verne with his parents and two brothers in 1921. A Bonita High School and La Verne College (now the University of La Verne) graduate, Elder taught math and social studies at Chino's D Street School and Chino junior and senior high schools. He served as a coach for baseball, basketball and football in addition to being the director of parks and recreation for the city of Chino.

"Chino at the time was a small school. As it grew larger, Frank Elder knew the kids' names and what their aspirations were," said Ruth Base, who was in Elder's math class. "He made you feel like you were important."

In 1996, the University of La Verne inducted Elder into the athletic hall of fame.

During World War II, Elder was an officer in the U.S. Navy. He also worked as field representative to former state Sen. Ruben Ayala.

"He was one of my role models. I wanted to be like him, you know," Ayala said.

The former senator remembered Elder as his baseball coach, teaching him how to bunt and making him run a lap when he made a mental error.

"I called him coach all my life," Ayala said.

Bill Kuskey, a 1953 Chino High graduate, was a quarterback for Elder's B football team. He clearly remembers the Navy-influenced plays that Elder would call.

"I can go into a huddle today and make a Frank Elder play," Kuskey said. "I still have dreams playing football for him."

Loved ones also remember Elder watching his children's games while holding hands with his wife, Estell, and square dancing with her at the Chino Senior Center.

Elder is survived by Estell Elder, his wife of 65 years; son Robert Elder; daughter Diana Mantelli; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Chino, 5559 Park Place. Contributions in his memory can be sent to the Frank Elder Scholarship Fund at Chino High, 5472 Park Place, Chino, 91710, c/o Vivian Stone.
