My Great Great Grandfather was Sterling Elder. I have found out that he was buried in an Indian Cemetary in Grady County, Oklahoma. Just outside of Chickasha. The cemetary is a Choctaw-Chickasaw Cemetary, but I always thought he was Cherokee. Anyone have any information on this?

Hi

You would think that STERLING Elder would be a rather uncommon given name but I suppose not. Can you give us an approximate birth year/death year and any of the locations that he might have lived during his life? Do you have his wife's name (and maiden name?)

Cheers,
Donna

Children from second marriage: Alice

Take a look at this 1880 census .... could be as some of the info is close.

http://www.familysearch.org/

Source Information:
Census Place Precinct 5, Palo Pinto, Texas
  Family History Library Film   1255322
  NA Film Number   T9-1322
  Page Number   142B

  Household:
Name  Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace
Sterling ELDER   Self   M   Male   W   34   GA   Farmer   GA   GA
Amanda C. ELDER   Wife   M   Female   W   27   GA   Keeping House   GA   GA
Francis ELDER   Son   S   Male   W   9   GA      GA   GA

Also - there is a family group of Elders from around Clarke Co Georgia and the given name of Sterling is relatively common in this famiy line.

Let me know if this rings any genealogical bells

Cheers,
Donna

Yes, That is his family. I have most of the names and dates. Just not where the Indian heritage came from.

Well, perhaps someone else is more experienced with Indian affairs can answer the technical questions about burial traditions. Is the only reason you think Sterling was of Indian heritage because he was buried in an Indian cemetery? I would wonder if that was a REQUIREMENT or did he just have an affection for them (and perhaps their way of life).

Can you go back any further in your family history than Sterling? The bottom line is that the answer lies in the Georgia area for now. As Sterling, and both of his parents are stated in the census to have been born there.

You might want to consider looking into a dna test - I do believe the have a test that shows "Native America" a one of the results. (I don't recall off the top of my head which test it is though)

Cheers,
Donna

Sterling Elder, b 1845 in either Coweta or Fayette County, GA was the son of Josiah Elder and Martha Bailey. He married Amanda C. Swanson 18 Dec 1867. No Native American blood that I can determine. Josiah is the son of Sterling Elder and Mary Stokes Herring. Sterling is the son of Joshua Elder and Minerva Hightower. Joshua is the son of Joseph Elder and wife, Mary, of Brunswick County, Virginia. Most of this information can be found in "Genealogy of the Elder Clan", Revised 1998, by Lee Elder.
