Just checking back in on the Elder family of Gibson County, Tennessee. I see that you have part of the Will of Benjamin Towler posted here. Benjamin was my 5th great grandfather. been awhile since I have looked at the Elder website. Michael Scrape mscrape@centurytel.net [/b]

Hi Michael,
Thanks for posting on the ELDER Family Research BB and on
the TN webpages.
I've appreciated using a quote from that Will several times recently,
in answer to Elder queries from possible descendants of slaves.

Do you know of cemeteries for ELDER slaves and their descendants in Gibson Co TN?

Now I'm hoping for a free DNA kit to be completed by the
Afro-American "Carrollton Georgia" family as possible descendants of David ELDER's slaves in Georgia.

"Carrollton" ELDER photos posted on their Ancestry webpage
at
http://community.ancestry.com/profile.aspx?mba=017D9D5D-0002-0000-0000-000000000000&uaction=member-tree-public

My notes posted as I found cemetery records in Georgia, etc:
at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nancyelder/ed/DavidElderDied1853Georgia.htm

Thanks again for your update!

No I am sorry I do not. I have a lot of time in Trenton over the years and visited many Elder graves but no slave graves. Back in 2001 I made a connection with a descendant of Polly Dancy who was one of the slaves given to Sarah Towler Dancy. Can't remember her name at this time but she and I spoke a few times and share info with her seems that she was a buyer for Sears and lived near Dancyville, TN believe the town was Stanton.

Hi Michael,
Thanks for thinking about the slaves' descendants and possible
cemeteries, too. Let us know if you hear about any of them if
you can.

Found some clues online.
A file named South-Gibson-Cemeteries.pdf (3.9 meg)
Searching for mention of "SLAVES":

ELAM CEMETERY
One of two family cemeteries of this name, both are located in
the Milan Arsenal.
The cemetery just to the south of this one has no stones
and is reputed to be for the Elam family slaves.

****
MT. ZION COMMUNITY METHODIST CHURCH CEMETERY
Mount Zion Methodist Church was organized in 1832. The
grandparents of Samuel Cole Williams, jurist and historian, were
among the prominent citizens of Medina, Humboldt and Old South
Gibson, who were buried here.
Slaves were buried in the northeast
corner of the cemetery. (Historical Marker)
****

OLD GIBSON PRIMITIVE BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY
....
It is known that there were also slaves buried in this old
cemetery.
