Cargilfield appoints visionary new head to build on £4.5 million development programme (Sept 2003)
Cargilfield is keeping up the momentum behind its £4.5 million investment programme by appointing a new Headmaster, John Elder, who has spent the last 18 years as a highly successful prep school Headmaster. John is currently the Headmaster at Malsis, a thriving
prep school in Yorkshire, and was previously Headmaster at Beeston Hall in Norfolk. Prior to that John spent 8 years teaching at Lathallan, near Montrose, where he himself was at prep
school. John is a Scot and has a house in the Angus foothills.
John studied at St. Andrews and Edinburgh Universities, as well as the University of East Anglia. After helping run one of the first bottle recycling plants in London's Docklands, he took up a career in teaching. John has taught senior prep school pupils Maths and English for 24 years, and coaches the rugby first XV and hockey first XI at
Malsis. His wife, Hanneke, teaches Religious Studies, Science and Maths, as well as looking after pastoral care and the domestic side. They have three children, two of whom are currently at Glenalmond College.

David Sole, Chairman of the Cargilfield Governors, commented on the appointment:
"We are delighted that John and Hanneke will be joining us at Cargilfield. They plan to take a very active role in running and developing the School, particularly on the academic and sporting sides. John leads from the front and has turned Malsis and Beeston Hall into exceptional prep schools."

John Elder added: "I know Cargilfield well from past matches and have many friends in Edinburgh who are former pupils. I'm also dedicated to the combination of boarding and a very rich day education. Our present school has 60 clubs on each week and 36 children have won scholarships to leading public schools in the last 4 years.

"The bottom line is that we believe in having a very happy school with girls and boys succeeding in as many areas as possible. I look forward to building on all that is excellent at Cargilfield, making sure that change and innovation create a prep school of real quality in every field."

John Elder intends to speed up the implementation of Cargilfield's long term development plans. These have already seen the recent opening of an impressive Pre-prep and Nursery for teaching 3 to 8 year-old girls and boys, located in a secluded corner of the campus across the lawn from the Upper School.

Cargilfield has also just invested £100,000 in the most up-to-date computer equipment and software. Children can now develop their IT skills from an early age in the two brand new, networked Computer Suites, one in the Pre-prep and the other in the Upper School. In total, there are nearly 50 new computers.

Significant improvements have also already been completed in the Upper School. The boarding accommodation for weekly-boarders and flexi-boarders has been refurbished and many of the classrooms have been modernised. Further improvements are planned and these will be announced shortly.

All-in-all, Cargilfield is investing heavily in its future, ensuring its status as Scotland's first prep school. "
