John's father:
"David Elder was born in Little Seggie, near Kinross in 1785. From his earliest years, he evinced a genius for mathematical studies,
and continued to master, without assistance, Simson's Euclid and a separate work on Algebra,
translated from the French, which he walked 18 miles to procure."

From my "ELDER in Scotland" file:
RE: QUERY received about touring Scotland
to see ELDER locations:

and I gave her some ELDER locations for traveling routes.

We still don't know which locations
are correct to match DNA for FRANKLIN CO PA, but
all turned out to be great ELDER locations to visit!

GLASGOW
JOHN ELDER monument, "steamship builder" -
a bit "out of the way" in South Glasgow.
photo:

Their favorite tour was the ISLE OF SKYE.
Plane landed first in Glasgow,
and they took a 3-day "HIGHLANDS" bus
tour from Glasgow to INVERNESS (lots of ELDER names there),
and then to ISLE of SKYE.
From the book "BRAVE SONS OF SKYE:"
"Sir GEORGE ELDER was a soldier born"....

Then from Glasgow on the West, to PERTH in the East
(where there are more ELDER names), and up to EDINBURGH.
They visited the "LORD PROVOST ELDER" meeting room at
the University of Edinburgh, to see the ELDER portrait there.
Favorite webpage for "LORD PROVOST ELDER"--found
Photos online of the Lord Provost ELDER room
at Univ. of Edinburgh,
using Quicktime viewer:
at
http://www.aaps.ed.ac.uk/ExtRel/Rooms/ElderRoom360view.htm

And an interesting book found described in a catalog:
.....
"The Right Honorable Thomas Elder," of Forneth,
Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh
Mezzotint, printed in colours with beautifully finished additional
hand colouring. Laid down on board.
Earlom (R[ichard].), after Sir Henry Raeburn, RA.
Fine condition, good margins, a little very light dust-soiling at
caption. Russell 12a.
Implausibly inscribed at foot, in pencil: "Coloured by Raeburn
himself".
"Elder of Forneth (1737-1799), Lord Provost of Edinburgh,
was, as a Baillie, one of the promoters of the rebuilding of
Edinburgh University.
The foundation stone was laid during his term
as Lord Provost, and he is shown with the plans of this by him."

Searched for town of FORNETH:
info at GENUKI:
-- Forneth: in Parish of Clunie, Perthshire, near Blairgowrie
at

afternoon of 19th July 1999,was introduced between the Lord

preceding; and made and subscribed the solemn affirmation pursuant to
