Hello Nancy, I got you message a while back and am just now getting back toyou. Is that slow or what? Anyway the only cemetary I know with Elders is the Oakland here in Trenton. When it warms up a little I`ll hop over there and take some photos of the stones. http://www.rootsweb.com/~tngibson/cemeteries/oakland1.htm We have a friend staying with us thats moving here from Mass and is a old house lover like us. She found a very nice victorian a couple blocks from us and I told her to be sure to find out who the first owner was. Well it was a Dr. McCree that of all things was married to Sallie Mai Elder, a daughter of the owner of this house. So she won`t be the first owner that lived here first! Thats a little spooky! Very Happy

Hi Nancy! I made a trip to oaklawn cemetary on a beautiful day and filled my memory card and still didnt get all the Elders. It`s a beautiful place with several old iorn fences and a gorgeous 19th century gazebo. This is the stone of Henery Lucas Elder who built the 1846 part of our house and is the father of Horace Mclung Elder who added the late victorian part to it in 1893.

So these Elders were originaly from Virginia? You really amaze me Nancy how much you can come up with on all these people. I enjoy your website very much! Very Happy Its also interesting how many have the same names. If you noticed the OtherSalli Mai Elder Mcree, she is the daughter of Horace Mclung. Our friend from Mass just moved into her house. Were hoping to find out if Horace had it built for her as its a very beautiful home. The elders in trenton were a wealthy lot and had prominent homes and bussiness`s here as well as in other towns. i found a photo that I hope to get copied of Benjmin Elder in front of his law office. This photo is the Gibson County Bank that John Wesley started and I believe that this is John Wesley and his neph. Horace Mclung who was a cashier until his death.

Thanks for all the photos! It's great to find out about
the people behind the names!

Awhile back I purchased the "PETER ELDER of VA" genealogy book
by Lee ELDER, published in year 2000,
so I have that computer list, as well as Michael Scrape's
WorldConnect entries.

At the beginning of Lee Elder's book,
he writes:
"The earliest history we have of the Elder "clan," they were living
in Scotland in the 15th Century. Eventually they emigrated to
England and Ireland on account of their religious liberties and viewpoints.
PETER ELDER, SR. along with two brothers, came to this country in the early 1600's. They landed at Norfolk, VA..."

In our ELDER DNA project,
we are now finding that the descendants
of PETER ELDER group
do not match DNA of my brother's FRANKLIN CO PA
group, or the PAXTANG PA group.
But they do all fit on the Scotland DNA chart.
So we're trying to find out where they all came from in Scotland.

Found online - earliest ELDER entry for NORTHERN SCOTLAND:
JOHN ELDER, cartographer,
born in Caithness in 1500's, contributed to publication of
MERCATOR ATLAS OF EUROPE
see
http://www.walkingtree.com/excerptbarber.html

MAPPING BRITAIN FROM AFAR
Chapter Excerpt by Peter M. Barber
... "In France [ELDER] presented Mary, Queen of Scots, with an
autograph letter and
(in a display of indirect vanity?) a fanciful map of the New Utopia ostensibly by his eight-year-old pupil, Lord Darnley."

So we're always hoping to find more origins.

Just as an interesting note:
While Michael Scrape and I both strongly believe that William M Elder who moved from Dinwiddie County, Virginia to Gibson County, Tennessee was of the Peter Elder line, paper evidence has not been found. However, all of the Dinwiddie County Elders whom I HAVE traced thus far connect to the Peter Elder line.
Dinwiddie is a burned county (many records were destroyed during the Civil War), but if there are any records still in existence which will help, I'm convinced I will find them eventually. I have two factors in my favor - I live 30 minutes from Dinwiddie Court House and Dinwiddie has a very liberal access policy concerning the old records.
As far as I'm aware, there are four vocal researchers (online) connected to the Dinwiddie Elders: Michael Scrape, Ken Elder, Bill Temple and yours truly. Of us all, I'm the only one still living in the area, so I feel a responsibility to untangle the Dinwiddie lines. In the last three years I have managed to untangle Bill's line and my husband's line, along with a few others.
As I narrow down the possibilities it seems increasingly likely (based on census ages) that Michael's ancestor William M Elder was the son of Ken's ancestor Thomas Elder. There were at one point four William Elder households in Dinwiddie, so it gets confusing. All I need is to find a piece of land that was held by each at different times, or some similar item. That is the focus of my next search at Dinwiddie. Maybe I could give Michael one more generation, at least.
I am convinced that my approach of trying to untangle all of the lines is the only way to trace particular lines successfully, especially with so many records missing.

Hi Cici,
Thanks so much for the update on research in VA.
That careful process certainly should help establish the early paper trails!

Thanks again for all you do to help us.
