from swab to results. The biggest challenge for us, and
one of the benefits for many of you, has been finding
a way to dramatically lower the yield of the DNA. It's all math, but
suffice to say that we have tested 3 different robots
and finally settled on one that even though not the fastest,
will handle several times our current volume, while also
producing the highest yield of actual DNA."

>"This process started in September, completed in December, the
robot was ordered on January 12 and the delivery was 8 weeks.
The robot arrived last week and we believe that this current batch (81) was
the last that we'll be doing manually...which means we will repurpose
about 32 hours of tech time per batch (like back to their real jobs).
That time and an additional highly experienced technician that is
already in-house should give us the horsepower we need.

Message on Hank's Kit #1 "Pending results file" at Family Tree DNA webpage:

Family Tree DNA says:
"Please note that quantities have increased beyond our projections in the last couple of months, and we had to adopt new processes. All of us are dealing with a new area of science applied to genealogical (commercial) use. There were no parameters for us to use as to:
a) make solid projections for the growth of this industry
b) establish a "production process" for larger quantities
Therefore, we are the ones who are establishing the "production process" (if we can call it this way) in quantities, and in doing this, you may see changes to your expected delivery date. It's not a process that can be replicated from other similar "production lines" or industries. Until now, this routine was applied in very limited scale to academic and scientific research. Labs never experienced this volume and we never expected those volumes in such a short time. You will agree with me that while in industries that have been there for a while, you have technical difficulties and uncertainties that affect your productivity levels and you are in most of cases aware of those. But this being a new industry, there is a higher degree of unpredictability than in industries with a history, and this will affect the delivery date. We are, therefore taking all the necessary steps to apply all the technology that is available to streamline and speed up the process. Therefore, your understanding and patience are extremely appreciated. You are making history with us."

Hi folks,
Glad to see a DNA report come in today for ELDER Kit #20.
Maybe other reports will arrive soon, too.

Kit #20 matches Kit #10 perfectly, which should be good,
except for trying to match the other PETER ELDER kits.
Maybe one of the new databases will give us a clue to another
surname or ELDER branch whenever more reports are done around the world.

We'll keep watching!
Nancy Elder Petersen

DNA #20 results should be posted soon to ELDER Results Webpage:
http://www.familytrail.com/elder/DNAresults.html

Today we received the "25 number" report for Kit #10 PETER's line,
but most new numbers don't match PETER's other numbers at all,
so still looking for this line.

Also received the '25 number" report for Kit #14 SCOTLAND, and most new numbers
don't match PETER there either. Amazing to have 8 numbers different on 25 section,
after only 2 different numbers on the 12 marker test! Have ordered
37 markers, so hope to find more International matches there.

Donna has posted these kits, plus
the new columns waiting for the 37 marker orders--

I don't think the DNA test results for #10 and #20 are likely to match any of the other Elder DNA results.. Both subjects are male descendants of sons of Jesse Elder (b 1788 NC):

Subject #10 and #20:

1. PETER ELDER, d. 1674 Old Rappahannock County - now Essex, VA
2. PETER, b. ca 1660 d. before 1687
3. WILLIAM, b. ca 1681 d. ca 1754/1755 Richmond, VA
4. PETER, b. 21-MAY-1715 Richmond, VA ( North Farnham Parish)
5. PETER, b. 01-DEC-1741 North Farnham Parish, Richmond Co, VA d. 1804 Surry County, NC
6. Unknown parents of Jesse Elder (b.1788 NC)- named as his grandson in Peter Elder's 1804 will.

I believe the DNA results rule out the possibility of Jesse being the son of one of Peter's sons, but please don't throw us out of the Elder family! I think it is likely that Jesse was the son of one of Peter's six daughters, but our Jesse could have been just an orphan taken in by Peter and Elizabeth. We will probably never know.

I extended the DNA test for #10 to 37 markers mostly out of curiosity. The 12 marker had 17 exact matches from participants in other surname groups and I even located several of the names in the general area where Jesse was born in 1788. So far, there are no perfect 25 marker matches and a few of the 12 marker matches matched 6 or 7 of the markers in the 13-25 group. Pretty far off, but it is interesting!
