Hello everyone,
I guess I'm the newest member here and totally lost in my line. I am trying to find the parents of Adolph Archie Elder. b;aug 16 1892/1893 in Ripley, Lauderdale Co, TN. d; jun 1974 in Al. His WWI draft card says he is native to Mississippi Co, AR. I cannot find him in any census until 1930 memphis tn.
He married Virginia Ann Curtis about 1917. They had James S, Albert A, and Mildred.
Last residence was Huntsville Al.He and his wife are buried in elmwood cemetery in Memphis, TN.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Michelle,
Glad to see you here!
Hope we can figure out if this is the PETER ELDER

History:
http://www.elmwoodcemetery.org/main/history.htm

"As you visit the grounds, you will notice the many magnificent monuments we have here. During the Victorian Era, the popular view of death became romanticized- death was now represented by angels, various flowers, life-sized figures, and by many other symbols. The epitaphs are truly a story in and of themselves.
As compelling as the monuments are, even more intriguing are the stories of the people buried at Elmwood. Among the 70,000 people buried here are 18 Confederate generals, 2 Union generals, Veterans from all US wars including the Revolutionary War, Senators, Mayors, and Governors. There are several madames (yes, we mean that kind), internationally known doctors, attorneys, immigrants, spies (the Father of the OSS is here), suffragists, river folks, common laws and outlaws...."
***
The new book, titled "In the Shadows of the Elms," was authored by local historian and columnist Perre Magness with photographs by NEA-recipient Murray Riss. Long-time friend of Elmwood Shelby Foote contributed the introduction.
The book offers biographical sketches of more than 1,000 individuals, a history of the cemetery, the city of Memphis, and the Rural Cemetery Movement as evidenced in Elmwood. There are more than 50 pages of color and black and white photography in the book, including never-before seen photos from the private collections of many Memphis families.

James D. Scrape was born about 1790 in England and came to America during the War of 1812 as a member of the King’s Royal Navy. During this time of war many Englishmen chose not to fight against their kinsmen and James was one of these.

Mary was the daughter of Benjamin Towler and Martha Darby. Benjamin served as a private on the Virginia Line during the American Revolution and was at Yorktown, Virginia when Lord Cornwallis surrendered to General George Washington in 1781. James Scrape was a sign maker and painter, as well as a wagon maker. James and Sarah had they following children
William Henry Scrape, James Scrape, Eliza Eleanor Scrape wife of Richard Bartley McGee, Susan M. Scrape wife of Samuel Watkins Hatchett, Fanny W. Scrape who died an infant, Sarah E. Scrape wife of William Carroll McGee and W. W. Harrison and Amanda A. Scrape wife of Franklin Elder. James D. Scrape died in Gibson County, TN in 1843 and Sarah D. Elder Scrape died in 1847.

WOW,
That was alot of info Nancy. Thank you AGAIN for all your help. I have looked at all these names in the past but could not connect any. Adolph says in the 1930 census that both his parents were born in TN. I have tried searching using AA, AD, A, and Dolph. Still no luck. I suspect I may find them in Memphis but haven't yet.
I have looked in Tallahatchie MS because they lived there awhile but no luck. My grandfather James S is buried in Batesville MS where I'm told there is a family plot? But whose family I do not know because I have yet to locate that cemetery.
Also my grandad was born in Tomato AR but the town and all its records were lost in the flood of 1920.
I hope this info helps put the pieces together somehow. I will keep looking.

Hi Michelle,
Thanks for posting the extra info, too.

I'll look for anything else that might be
posted online these days. Always hoping
for more databases to be added in
Ancestry.com,
or the LDS books online,
or the free Heritage Quest books online at
my library. I'll try checking some of those.

Maybe Michael Scrape would have an idea.
He has researched most of that area, too.

Just an update...I have gone through over 7000 elder names on the 1900 census and STILL no luck......aaaaagggggggghhhhhhh... I have found that the plot in Batesville where James S is buried is a Buss family plot but I cannot locate it still. I know Adolph repeatedly used the name A D Elder but I cannot locate him as a child still. Am beginning to get frustrated. Anybody have any other suggestions for me? I would be grateful. Thanks

Hi Michelle,
Well, fortunately there are more ways to discover information,
although it would be great to find the census entries.
Maybe when there are more thorough indexes in the
various county Genweb pages, someone will discover the mistakes in
spelling or whatever is causing us this census trouble!

Meanwhile, we can pursue other routes to info,
hopefully finding the locations of burial plots, which can
lead to more local info.
I am eagerly watching my e-mail for news from
the volunteer who was willing to take photos in Memphis.

If all else fails, my brother has in-laws in Memphis!
He visits there sometimes, and has taken cemetery
photos on other trips for me in Pennsylvania, too!
Nice guy!

Always hoping for a new clue!
Will let you know if I find one...

Hi Nancy and Michelle. My wife and I have recently move into a large victorian home in Trenton, tn. in Gibson county, that was owned by the Harry Lucas Elder family for well over one hundred years. If I`m right Harry Lucas was a brother to the James who was the bank president in Memphis that you spoke of. Another brother, John Wesley Elder started the bank of Trenton and Harry Lucas worked as cashier for him all his life and also lived in this home and added the front part in 1893. This link of the Scrape family that is entwined with the Elder family.

Thanks for the great photos!
We're still hoping for more cemetery photos from
the volunteer in Memphis,
where a "James ELDER" could be another relative.

I found a photo of young Horace McClung ELDER posted
by Michael Scrape here:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~tngibson/photos/Horace_McClung_Elder.htm

Maybe I can find some census entries.
