JOHN McFARLAND ELDER, born March 2, 1843,
son of JOSEPH ELDER, JR, of Westmoreland Co PA.

Death Notice:
Taken from Ancestry.com Newspaper images:
John McFarland Elder, died Tuesday, July 21, 1874, Reno, Washoe County, Nevada

Nevada State Journal, Saturday, July 25, 1874
Resolutions of Respect, Hall of Truckee Lodge No. 14, I.O.O.F, Reno, Nev., July 22, 1874.
To N.G., V.G., Officers and Members of Truckee Lodge No. 14, I.O.O.F.
Your Committee appointed to draft resolutions expressing the sense of this Lodge on the
death of Bro. J.M. ELDER, P.G., beg leave to submit the following:
WHEREAS, It hath pleased an allwise and beneficient Providence to remove
from our midst by death our well beloved Bro., J.M. ELDER, P.G., an esteemed member of this Lodge; and
WHEREAS, The intimate relations long preserved by the deceased with the members of this Lodge,
render it proper that we should express our appreciation of his services as an Odd Fellow, and of his merits as a man.
Therefore, be it Resolved, that in the death of our late brother, this Lodge has been deprived
of one of its most honored members, who proved himself in all the relations of life a friend,
a consistent Odd Fellow, a congenial companion, and a good upright citizen.
RESOLVED, That we will ever cherish the memory of his many exalted virtues,
trusting that his faithful life below will be rewarded by admission into the Grand Lodge above,
where Friendship, Love and Truth ever abides.
RESOLVED, That we deeply sympathise with the relations and friends of the deceased Brother,
and tender to them our unfeigned, and heart felt sympathy in their sore affliction, at the loss of a
true and tried friend, a devoted Odd Fellow, and an honest, upright citizen.
RESOLVED, That the Charter of this Lodge be draped in mourning; and that the officers and
members of this Lodge wear the usual badge of mourning for the period of thirty days in respect
to the memory of our late Brother.
RESOLVED, That these resolutions be spread in full upon the minutes of this Lodge, and
that a copy of the same be forwarded to the relations of the deceased Brother, and
that the same be published in the Daily Nevada State Journal, and the Daily Reno Crescent.
Com.: Wm. Lucas, Chas. H. Stoddard, N.C. Hammersmith, Ren, July 22nd, 1874.

John McFarland ELDER, d. Tues, July 21, 1874
Obituary, printed Saturday July 25, 1874
Nevada State Journal (Ancestry.com digitized image)

It is with feelings of the deepest sadness that we chronicle the demise of John M. Elder,
than whom Nevada never had a better citizen or truer gentleman within her borders.
Mr. Elder was for a long time the General Agent of Woodruff & Ennor, the well known stage men,
and has also been connected with Wells, Fargo & Co. Last year he paid his folks in Pennsylvania a visit,
and on the trip contracted the seeds of that terrible disease, consumption. Returning to this coast,
he went to Southern California for his health, but continued to fail, and about six weeks ago he returned to Reno,
and Tuesday morning died.
He was an Odd Fellow in good standing of Truckee Lodge No. 14,
and of Reno Encampment No. 5.

Found Nevada State Journal (Reno) Sat. March 8, 1873, Col. 3 (Ancestry.com newspaper images)
He's still alive here:
"FROM AMERICA."
Dan B. Boyd and John M. Elder both well-known to all Washoeites,
have just returned from America.
Johnnie has been rusticating around Philadelphia, Washington, New York,
and Boston, while Dan has been away out in the backwoods in Iowa and Wisconsin.
They are both happy now that they are back in the sage brush country again."

From: Bob Berrington, Reno Nevada (RAOGK)
>Nancy, The good news is that I found the grave site.
Unfortunately there is no headstone.
According to an old timer from the cemetery, John's grave was at
the old IOOF Cemetery which was disturbed by the railroad coming to town.
(The old cemetery is now a liquor store on railroad property downtown.) They
moved the remains to Mt View Cemetery in 1902. I have attached pictures.
The Mt View cemetery is on a hilltop overlooking downtown Reno. A very
pleasant area and well maintained.
I also copied the newspaper article the IOOF placed in 1874, if you do not have a copy I can sent it to you.
Hope this helps,
Bob Berrington
