The Latest News From Helmsdale in 2004
...." Mechanic Graham Elder,
of John Elder and Sons,
The Garage, Dunbeath, was involved in recovering the vehicle.
He told The Northern Times: "They were lucky, very lucky indeed.
The car went right over the barrier and there was not much ground beneath it.
There was just a wee bit of a slope at the back of the car - and then it was straight down." _________________ Nancy Elder Petersen

The area features in the Norse sagas and was a principality of the Vikings long before it became a part of the Scottish kingdom. Earlier than that there are many signs of human habitation but who was there and if they were displaced by the Danes is shrouded in the mists of time.

Dunbeath
The village of Dunbeath has a Primary School, Pre-school/Playgroup facilities, Church, Community Hall, Hotel, Post Office and Shop. Dunbeath village is famous for the novelist Neil Gunn and the surrounding area and its people provided inspiration for several of his novels. The Dunbeath Heritage Centre features interesting displays on the natural and social history of the area. Beautiful walks can be taken down by the Dunbeath Strath along which there are several brochs (ancient fortified houses). The harbour has fine views looking across to Dunbeath Castle. The nearest large town is Wick some 20 miles away. There is a regular bus service to the north and south. _________________ Nancy Elder Petersen
