The records were partially destroyed in a fire. They are rather a hodge podge and in some cases no one knows what they mean. They tried to redo them and were only partially successful.

In Reply to: Re: Elders of Pa. by Thomas Lester Wilson of 2075
Several years ago, I was asked to do some census lookups on an Elder family for an individual who was looking for George W Elder, brother of Thomas J Elder.
Just about anything that is not from the census is from one or more of those standard county histories that help so much. Lewis Publishing Co's 1887 Kosciusko Co, Indiana history is the source for persons in that county. No doubt that is where I got the fact that Thomas J was married to Cynthia Daniels who was born in PA 2 April 1808.
As for George W Elder's line, Kaler and Maring's History of Whitley County, Indiana (Indianapolis: B F Bowen & Co, 1907) has a write-up on Abraham Elder pages 672-674. W. A. Goodspeed's Counties of Whitley and Noble, Indiana (1882) has entries on Jacob R. and Abraham Elder. A few of the obituaries of Whitley Co, IN have been extracted for publication and are in DC at the DAR library, some typewritten.
I regret that I no longer have whatever pages I copied or hand-written notes made when I did the project in 1994, and I am not likely to get back to Washington, DC anytime soon. I never expected to look at this again. So, I'm afraid that what follows may be disappointing. At worst these few notes may help someone get started.
The original request (July 1994) included the following:
John Elder "came to America from Northern Ireland (Ulster) just before the Revolutionary War. He served in the war on the side of the Colonies, then after the war, settled in Dauphin Co, PA. and married a Mary Wright. They had nine children who grew up there then eventually married and went west—or vice versa. One of them, a George Washington Elder . . . died in Whitely County, Indiana in 1860. He was a twin to a Thomas Jefferson Elder."
The requestor also sent the transcription of the LW&T of William Wright of Hanover Twp, Lancaster Co, PA, dated 31 Aug 1782 and proved 6 Nov 1782. He made bequests to his wife Margaret, son-in-law John Elder and Mary his wife. Wife Margaret was left her bed and bed furniture; all her wearing apparel; all the household furniture except one case of drawers; two cows, two sheep, two heifers; and the benefits of his part of the farm and horses and farm utensils, with the half of the buildings, with my two boys William and Moses Dickey, the grain in the barn for the use of the family, so long as she remains a widow. He left to his daughter Margaret "all my part of the Plantation at her mother's deceas or marage." Finally, he left some personal estate to "my litel garl Mary Coner". Executors were wife Margaret and trusty friend James McMillan. Witnesses: Tim L. Green, Thos McMillan, and Jas McMillan Jr. Timothy Green Esquire and Thomas McMillan were proving witnesses on 6 Nov 1782 before John Huble, Regr.
To John and Mary Elder her left the sum of 50 pounds, half to be paid two years after Wright's death and half five years after. Further, "the Benefit of the House he has in the meadow & field beyond the House & Firewood for the Term of ten years after my deceas if he chooses to live there, but I don't alow him to sell his Right to any stranger this for their full shear out of my Real & Personal Estate."
Lancaster Co, PA tax lists survive for scattered years. The tax list for 1771 does not show William Wright in Hanover. He is listed in 1772, 1773, and 1779. He is not on the 1782 list, but Jno Elder appears as an "inmate" which describes someone with an independent household living on someone else's land.
Hanover Township, Lancaster Co, PA went into the formation of Dauphin Co, PA in 1785 when it was formally divided into East Hanover and West Hanover. In 1813, East Hanover and a little of West Hanover went into the formation of Lebanon Co, PA. If John Elder did continue to occupy the house in the meadow on the Wright farm, he would have been in Dauphin Co after the change in 1785.
I did not do much with this because this area of investigation needs much work by someone who has the time and resources to go through original county (Lancaster, Dauphin, and maybe Lebanon) and PA state records.
George Washington and Thomas Jefferson Elder are not named in William H Egle's chapter on Elders in Pennsylvania Genealogies.
Based on the information I have at present, this is the best I can do. I don't think I have anything else to add. Good luck with your search!

SENECA CO, OHIO:
In 1820, Seneca County, Ohio had not been formed. It was still Indian land. The Elders had to have been elsewhere before that. Perhaps still in PA; perhaps elsewhere in OH.
Applications to purchase land in Adams Twp, Seneca Co, OH (Township 3 N. Range 16 E.) were as follows:
1824, March William Elder. Section 23.
1829, Sept Samuel Elder. Section 29.
1830, Nov Thomas J. Elder. Section 27.
1831, Feb George W. Elder. Section 27.
The 1830 census of Seneca Co, Ohio shows the following:
Hopewell Twp:
Page 142 George W. Elder 20001--00001
Adams Twp:
Page 165, line 16 Thomas J Elder 10001 --20001
Page 166, line 01 Samuel Elder 1000001--00002
Page 166, line 06 William Elder 100001 --10001
Also on page 166 is Samuel Hardsock who is probably the Samuel Hartsough, a brother-in-law of George W. Elder who preceded the Elders to Whitley Co, IN.
George W and Thomas J were in their 20s as were their spouses. George had two boys under age 5. Thomas had one boy and two girls under 5. [Later we'll see that George's boys were Jacob R and John, while Thomas's boy was named William.] William Elder was in his 30s. Samuel Elder was in his 40s.
The 1840 census of Seneca Co, Ohio shows the following:
Adams Twp:
Page 132, line 06 T. J. Elder 011001 --211001
Page 132, line 20 Samuel Elder 01100001--120001
For T J, this can be read to mean:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx :M : F
30-39 [1800--1810] : 1 : 1
20-29 [1810--1820] : 0 : 0
15-19 [1820--1825] : 0 : 0
10-14 [1825--1830] : 1 : 1
05-09 [1830--1835] : 1 : 1
00-04 [1835--1840] : 0 : 2
****************************************************
THOMAS JEFFERSON ELDER:
Here is a little about George Washington Elder's brother, Thomas J Elder. They were not twins. Thomas Jefferson Elder who lived in Clay Twp, Kosciusko Co, Indiana, one county west of Whitley Co where George W lived. He was born in the first decade of the 1800s in PA or OH; died 20 Feb 1855. He was married to Cynthia Daniels who was born in PA 2 April 1808. (His widow married 2nd Charles Hill in 1856.) Their first son, William Elder, was born 4 Feb 1826 in Seneca Co, OH. Other children were born in Ohio between 1830 and ca 1841. Samuel D. Elder was the first of their children born in Clay Township, Kosciusko Co, IN.
Children known from census records:
William Feb 1826, OH
George ca 1835, OH
Sarah ca 1834, OH
Elizabeth ca 1836, OH
Jane ca 1840, OH
Amanda ca 1842, OH
Samuel ca 1844 IN
Leah ca 1846 , IN
Marquis DeL. ca 1849, IN
The Kosciusko County, Indiana census records for 1850 enumerate him in Clay Twp, Page 382, #134 (7 Oct 1850) as Thos J Elder, 37, OH, Farmer, value of estate: 1000; and Cynthia, 42, PA.
In 1860, Cynthia Hill was in Kosciusko Co, Clay Twp, Oneida PO. Jane, Amanda, Samuel, Leah, and Marquis DeL. Elder were at home with her. William and George had their own households in the same township nearby. Cynthia resumed use of "Elder" as her surname, for Cynthia Elder 72 is in Clay Twp, Kosciusko Co in 1880; self and both parents born PA. She married Charles Hill in 1856 who was deceased by 1860, and her children were all Elders, so it probably made more sense to be known as "Elder" than "Hill".
******************************************************
GEORGE WASHINGTON ELDER:
In 1838, George Washington Elder moved to Whitley County, IN. He was among the earliest settlers of Troy Twp. Etna and Troy have been merged since then to form Etna-Troy Twp. Troy was the one on the south.
George Washington Elder was born ca 1801, in Ohio if this is correct, which it may not be. PA makes more sense. He married Sarah Rine, sister of Joel Rine, who preceded the Elders to Troy Twp in 1837. Joel Rine lived one mile east of George Washington Elder. Sarah Rine's mother Elizabeth Rine was the first white person to die in Troy Twp. Five children were born in OH through ca 1835. The sixth was born in Indiana ca 1840. Altogether they had ten children, of whom eight survived to maturity. Names known are: Jacob R., John, Joel, Abraham, Samuel, Mary, George, and Eliza.
After his death, his family was listed in Troy Township, Whitley Co on the 1860 census. Four children are at home with Sarah. John has married and begun a family. Unfortunately, most of us use the printed index to census records put out by AISI for northern Indiana 1860, but they forgot to index Whitley County! So I have not accounted for Jacob and Joel.
Sarah (Rine) Elder was born ca 1805 in PA. In 1870, Sarah (65, PA) resided with Jacob's household in Troy Twp, Whitley Co, IN. She died 14 Feb 1874 at age 69y-5m-8d.
As of 1907, only two children of George W. and Sarah (Rine) Elder were living: Samuel and Abraham.
* Jacob R. Elder was born 14 Feb 1827 in Seneca Co, OH. A biographical sketch says his parents were "natives of Pennsylvania" and that his father died in 1859 at the age of 57. Jacob was the oldest child. He married Leah Coyle. He was the father of a son Marion R. and two daughters, Candace and Nora. His household is listed again in 1880 census in Troy Twp.
* John Elder was on the 1860 census in Troy Twp (30, OH), but moved to near Columbus, Salamanca Twp, Cherokee Co, Kansas where he died 7 Dec 1891. I did find in Salamanca Twp, Cherokee Co, KS John Elder (40, OH) in 1870 and John Elder (50, OH) in 1880. He says both parents were born in PA. He had wife Mary [June 1836, OH] and eight children: five born through Aug 1866 in IN, and three born as early as Aug 1870 in KS. Mary, his widow, was in Columbus, KS in 1900 with four children, including a married daughter.
* Abraham Elder was born 11 August 1834 in Seneca Co, OH. He married 19 Nov 1855 Mary Ann Harpster [1837, OH]. Abraham Elder and his father-in-law Henry Harpster each acquired a part of the original Joel Rine tract in Troy Twp. Thus he could say that he came to own the land where he had first gone to school. After retirement in 1895, he lived in Columbia City, Whitley Co. They lived on Elm Street in 1900. He died in July 1919 (obit of the 17th says it was the previous Monday). Son Henry died in childhood. His son, Delbert S. [March 1869] married Electa Winona Noble [July 1871] and they had three children -- Ralph E., Esther M., and Ted H. -- between 1891 and 1897. Delbert managed the farm that Henry Harpster had acquired from the Rine land. The 1870 census of Troy Twp shows Abram and Mary with Delbert (age 1) residing with Mary's parents. Kaler and Maring's History of Whitley County, Indiana (Indianapolis: B F Bowen & Co, 1907) has Abraham Elder pages 672-674.
* Samuel Elder, according to one account, left IN around the late 1870s and moved eventually to Perry Co, Arkansas where he was said to be living ca 1907. However, I did not find him on the 1880 or 1900 census Soundex index of AR. In 1870, though, one Samuel G. Elder [33, OH] is listed next to John Elder in Salamanca Twp, Cherokee Co, KS. Samuel Elder (43, OH) was in Salamanca Twp, Cherokee Co, KS near John Elder again in 1880. That entry lists both parents born Ireland (which doesn't make any sense at all). In 1870, he has wife Almira [20. OH] and two children: Edith M. [2, IN] and Delbert S. [March 1870]. In 1880, his wife's name (difficult to read) looks like Elenora (31, OH); also there were Edith age 12 born IN, and Delbert [10] and Zilla [7] born KS.

*********************************************
UNKNOWN:
Also in Kosciusko Co, IN in 1850 were some other Elders. I haven't figured out whether there was a relationship or, if so, what it might have been. For the record, at Wayne Twp #109/109 (8 May 1850) were John Elder (39, PA) and Cath (27, OH) and children. This John Elder was born in Bedford Co, PA on 8 April 1811. He moved ca 1829 to Richland Co, OH. His wife was Catherine Poorman. They lived about 2.5 miles east of Warsaw, IN. John died 4 March 1887 in Wayne Twp. Children were Margaret, Elizabeth, William, Robert, Catherine, Sarah, George, Mary, Sophie, Samuel, and Isabel. Source: Lewis Publ. Co 1887 Kosciusko Co history pages 556, 613.
In 1860, in Troy Twp, Whitley Co, In there was one Samuel Elder (70, PA) and Anna (54, PA) and Sara (21, OH) and Synthia (18, OH). Also one George Cox (21, IN) resided with them. In 1870, Samuel Elder (80, PA) and Anna (63, PA) are still there, but Cynthia (27, OH) is in the adjoining household with William Elder (40, OH) and unreadable name female Elder (39, OH) who is an invalid.
There is also one other Samuel Elder who appears to have been born in Pennsylvania ca 1811-15. Three children were born in Ohio through ca 1842. The fourth was born in Indiana ca 1846. Samuel moved to Whitley Co, IN at a later time than George -- in the 1840s. The 1850 census of Whitley Co, IN does not name townships. In 1860, Samuel was in Thorn Creek township while George's family was in adjacent Troy Twp. He is of an age to be a younger brother of George and Thomas, and he did name his oldest son John, but I have seen nothing to prove a connection. He may be related, but maybe not.
