I thought at first that one of the pages was
a sample of Rev. John Elder's handwriting, but maybe it's
someone else-- two paragraphs, handwritten, titled:
"Two Sermons by John Elder, Uncle of Parson Elder"
One dated MDCCXXV and one MDCCXXVII
so that's 1725 and 1727 I believe.

"Reasons For Moderation In the present Debates amongst Presbyterians in the North Of Ireland.
By John Elder, M.A., Minister of the Gospel (Quotation)
Belfast: Printed by James Blow, and are to be Sold at his Shope, MDCCXXV."

"A Letter To the Reverend Mr. Robert McBride;
Occasion'd by his pretending to defend Mr. Elder's Suspension, and
by devers injurious Reflections cast upon Mr. Elder, in his late Pamphlet,
Ens..the Overtures transmitted by the General Synod, 1725, set in a fair Light, etc.
By John Elder A.M., Minister of the Gospel. (Quotation).
Belfast, Printed by James Blow, and ...to be Sold at his Shope."

PostPosted: Sat Jan 31, 2004 1:17 pm    Post subject: Paxton--Egle, Swaim and Cummings Reply with quote

Hi folks,
Thanks to Francesca Elder Boone for sending me the pamphlet
by Rev. William SWAIM,
"Facts are Strangers in The Histories of The Early Years of Paxton and Derry Presbyterian Churches," 1989, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, 136 p.

It certainly is a different and more excited view of the PA Church history than found in the "History of Paxton Church" by Morton Graham Glise, 1976.
SWAIM seems to take direct aim and shoot at everything said there!

SWAIM writes such angry words about William EGLE and some of our dear Old ELDER family members!
He doesn't tell ALL the problems with EGLE's genealogies, but he is obviously upset with Egle's Church history writings, many dates, locations and people associated with the old PA Churches.
Swaim repeats himself many times in the 136 pages, mostly with the same indignant language.

The pamphlet has no index to list the many JOHN ELDER references,
but I noted especially on Page 56:
SWAIM says:
"Elsewhere Egle's own writings prove that at the age of eighty
Thomas ELDER wrote a grievous, self-serving error on one of the three
or four most important aspects of his father's life:
"Rev'd JOHN ELDER was born in Scotland in the year 1706.
Received a Classical education at Edinburg and graduated in Edinburg College.
He subsequently studied Divinity there and received license to preach
the gospel. "
[Helen Bruce Wallace, "Historic Paxton, Her Days and Her Ways,"
Privately printed, 1913, 29, quoting Egle.]

SWAIM says:
"The wording indicates that Egle and Wallace thought that Edinburgh University had licensed JOHN ELDER to preach."
"To the contrary, in or about 1940 the late Hubertis M. Cummings, a
member of Paxton Church and an Associate Historian at the
Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, wrote letters to
Edinburgh and the other old universities in Scotland and learned that JOHN ELDER had not graduated from any of them. Cummings wrote an
article correcting the myth..."
****
Yipes! Maybe I should try to find CUMMINGS' article, perhaps something good can be learned from that inquiry, anyway!

This could be the CUMMINGS reference mentioned by SWAIM:
Found In: George W. Franz book: "Paxton: a study..." 1989
From his Bibliography lists on page 291:
Cummings, Hubertis.
"Captain Timothy Green and the Reverend Mr. John Elder,"
Journal of the Presbyterian Historical Society.
XXIII (vol. 23, 1945) p. 48-54.

University of Washington library online catalog holdings,
http://www.lib.washington.edu
listed that volume 23,1945, of
"Journal of the Presbyterian Historical Society. "
Requested this week
from Interlibrary loan,
Jan 29, 2004.

Received 2/12/04:
Xerox copy of the article written by Hubertis Cummings,
"Captain Timothy Green and the Reverend Mr. John Elder"
Journal of the Presbyterian Historical Society, 1945, vol. 23, Pages 48-54.

No mention of his research into John Elder's education.

Using the same indignant tone as SWAIM, the article cites letters and documents
to show that John ELDER was not given the rank of "Colonel," but only "Commander."

Page 48:
"Amid a number of items from the correspondence of the Reverend Mr. John Elder preserved in the files of the Dauphin County Historical Society at Harrisburg is a letter addressed to that eighteenth-century pastor of Paxton Presbyterian Church by a military subordinate writing from Hanover on October 5, 1763. Its author was Captain Timothy Green..."
He says: "Rev'd Sir ....I have ordered all the Company to git Redy...."

Cummings finally concedes of JOHN ELDER:
Page 54:
"By a quaint, modern-Kentucky-like courtesy he
may have been called Colonel by some of his briefly commanded rangers."

Footnote references:
Page 49: "Data for Timothy Green's career in the movement for American Independence
are drawn generally from W.H. Egle's History of Dauphin County, pp. 78-79 and 99-100."
Page 50: "That John Elder carried his rifle with him regularly, in view of the dangerous conditions of his era, is hardly to be doubted. That he stacked it by his pulpit may be more questionable. But his son Thomas, Sprague, Webster, and Nevin are all responsible for statements to the effect of its presence there."
Wallace, Helen Bruce: Historic Paxton, p. 38.

(I'll try requesting a xerox of Sprague's article on JOHN ELDER by using that page and vol.)

"John Elder, according to Sprague's Annals, was born in County Antrim
in 1706.  According to Egle's Pennsylvania Genealogies, he was born
in the city of Edinburg, January 26, 1706.  Sprague says he was left
in Edinburgh in care of his uncle, Rev. John Elder, to complete his
classical studies and prepare for the ministry.  He graduated at the
University of Edinburgh, studied theology and was licensed to preach
in 1732.  Four or five years afterwards, probably in 1736, he came to
America, presented his credentials to the Presbytery of New Castle
and was received by that body and sent by it to the Presbytery of
Donegal, October, 1737..."

University of Washington Library catalog (also State of PA library)
has entry:
Sprague, William Buell, 1795-1876
"Annals of the American pulpit"
New York, Arno Press, 1969
[Reprint ed.] 9 vols.
v. 3-4. Presbyterian.

Hi Francesca,
Thanks for posting the offer
to send on the book "History of
Paxton Presbyterian Church" by
GLISE, to another researcher.
That is indeed the one Gordon sent to me, and I know he would be happy to have others read it, too.
Hope you receive some replies

Searching Univ. of Edinburgh Library online info:
RE: Early students

University of Edinburgh Library Archives:
http://www.lib.ed.ac.uk/resources/collections/specdivision/eua.shtml
"Student Records:
" The surviving records of Edinburgh University students between 1583 (when the University was
established) and the present day vary greatly. Until the 1730s, the only evidence of a student's
presence is a signature in the matriculation or enrolment books, dating from 1627, and, if the student graduated, a signature in the graduation album, dating from 1587. At no time was any information about family, parents, or anything else of genealogical nature recorded."
...
Search fees
Charges for searches in the records of Edinburgh University Archives will be applied as
appropriate.
For a search of student records, a charge of £30 including VAT [tax] must be received before any work can be done. Unfortunately, it is impossible to provide a free student records searching service.
Up to 1.5 hours will be allocated to the search but there can be no guarantee that any record of an individual student will be found and no refunds can be given if this is the case.
If, as a result of a successful search, an enquirer wishes to order photographic copies of
documentation, additional charges will apply. Again, payment must be received in advance before
any work can be done. Due to the high volume of enquiries received there is a constant backlog of
enquiry work.
If an enquirer wishes to pursue with a request, a cheque for £30 or an international money order
which must be in sterling drawn on a British bank should be sent. The enquiry will then be added to our action list."
