Hi folks,
TV news telling today about rescuing the toddler from HUNTER REGION wilderness north of Sydney,
Australia, made me wonder where Sir Thomas ELDER (coming from Fife, Scotland) explored and mapped Australian wilderness. (Not in HUNTER region)
Here’s an Australian map I found using Google:
at
https://nla.gov.au/nla.obj-232133673/view
Zoom in for many notes on map:
Description - around Adelaide - where Sir Thomas contributed to the University there:
“Map showing the routes travelled and discoveries made by the exploring expeditions
equipped by Thomas Elder and under the command of Ernest Giles : between the years 1872-6 /
compiled by order of the Surveyor General from Mr. Giles original plans ; drawn by Edwin S. Berry.
Call Number
MAP RM 2902/1
Created/Published
Adelaide : Surveyor General's office, 1876
I also asked Google for “Sir Thomas ELDER and camels in Australia.”
which found more about Adelaide region
at
https://www.adelaide.edu.au/library/special/stories/elder/camels
“ Description: Sir Thomas Elder, with his introduction of camels, solved one of the problems of transport of goods in the interior of South Australia, and also rendered the exploration and exploitation of the far regions possible.” … Re: Camels from India: …”The remaining camels were removed to Elder’s stations at Beltana in the Flinders Ranges and Umberatana, near Lake Hope, where they were successfully bred. He introduced three different stock of camels – the Mekraua for speed and the Scind and Kandahar for strength.” _________________ Nancy Elder Petersen
