MY name is Ginger ..I was born Virginia Ann Elder. daughter of Albert A and Mary Lorraine. For many years I was hoping that I would find my father Albert A and my grandparents other relatives I knew nothing about . I know that Albert passed many years ago as have others whom I have never had the opportunity to meet or get to know. Through a friend I believe I have managed to find my relatives. I have received emails from Michelle and hopefully will have an opportunity to correspond and meet her and other family members. Thank you for this site!
Best Regards,
Ginger

Hi Ginger,
I'm so glad to hear that you are related to
the Adolph ELDER researchers!

I'm still waiting for a copy of Adolph ELDER's Social Security Application,
which should be coming from their Records Center soon.
I used my Ancestry.com online subscription
to print the request form from their database.
In the past, I have found interesting
addresses and other relatives' names on these forms, as the
person filling them out for the first time is often a young person
living at home.

Also, the volunteer who said he would photograph the ELDER
stones at Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis hasn't had time yet,
but I'm still hoping he can do that. There could be a clue
at Elmwood, as to Adolph's parents names, too.

Let us know if you discover any more information about Adolph
and his relatives! I'll keep looking....

Hi Ginger,
I'm using this "Southern" topics to reply to your
query about ELDER relatives--I do hope to find more
about the ADOLPH ELDER connection, so when we find
his parents, we'll probably know for sure which line,
but I'm fairly sure he will be in the "PETER ELDER of VA" line,
where we find most of the ELDER families in the MEMPHIS area.

There are more ELDER families in Eastern Tennessee,
for example, in Sevier County, who
have participated in our ELDER DNA project, and
who match my brother's DNA perfectly, so we now
place those families in the different "Franklin County PA" line.

I recently received my DAR membership for
the Rev. War soldier, ROBERT ELDER (1730-1807),
who lived in Franklin Co PA. We now have 15 other
known ELDER DNA participants who match that ancestry.
It's great to find the connections to those early settlers!

I've been scanning and posting the ELDER Newsletters
on my webpages, as given permission by the author,
Donna Logan, before she died.

See the first page of the ELDER NEWSLETTER (ended in 1996),
Vol. 1, #1, p. 1, 1993

Includes the letter to "DEAR COUSINS" from Donna Logan,
and a photo of Dr. Basil Dorsey Elder and family,
taken about 1910 in Huntington, West Virginia.

Hi Ginger,
For fun and info, I requested Mapquest.com directions from
Wilmington to Chambersburg, in Franklin Co PA, where the
Franklin County Historical Society and courthouse are located.
They have lots of interesting ELDER family information there.
Distance: 151.42 miles
Time: 2 hours and 40 minutes using PA Turnpike.

I should also mention the books and documents at
Historical Society of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia,
which has wonderful papers for the ELDER family
of Harrisburg, or "PAXTANG PA," especially.

We know now, because of the ELDER DNA project,
that "PAXTANG PA" ELDER line is different
from either "PETER ELDER of VA" or "FRANKLIN CO PA".

See online catalog at Hist. Soc. of PA:
http://www.hsp.org

Type in: ELDER FAMILY

finds the "FRANKLIN CO PA" group:
Descendants of Robert Elder (d.1807), Franklin County, Pa.
Call Number: FC El
Location: Closed Stacks (call slip needed)
Status: On shelf
Title: Descendants of Robert Elder (d.1807), Franklin County, Pa.
Local Note(s): Acc. 1983
Subject(s): Elder family.

*****
and the "PAXTANG PA" group:
Call Number: FC El
Location: Closed Stacks (call slip needed)
Status: On shelf
Title: Descendants of Robert Elder, who was born 1679, in Scotland, and immigrated to America about 1730, settling in Lancaster (now Dauphin) County, Pennsylvania.
Local Note(s): Mame E. Wood collection.
Subject(s): Elder family.

***
I don't see any of the "PETER ELDER OF VA" group listed separately
there. Maybe I can find another book with some of them.

Have you seen this WorldConnect entry?-
posted elsewhere in "Southern Topics" --
This is probably also the line for
"ADOLPH ARCHIE ELDER",
if we can prove it through his parents.

JAMES ELDER of Rutherford Co TN
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:1573606&id=I0689
by Krista James
e-mail: KWJames@wwwt.net
ID: I0689
Name: James ELDER
Sex: M
Birth: ABT. 1765 in Brunswick Co., VA
Death: 1824 in Rutherford Co., TN
Note: Per Lee Marks Feb, 2001
JAMES ELDER, SR. was born abt 1765 in Brunswick County, VA and died 1824 in Rutherford
County, TN. On September 9, 1789 he married Mary "Polly" Mason in Rustburg, Campbell County,
VA; she was the daughter of John Mason. James (Sr.) and Mary "Polly" had several children. Joshua in
1794, James (Jr.) in 1795, Sarah (or Lucy) in 1797, Elizabeth in 1799, Lucy in 1800, David in 1803,
William N. in 1806, Francis in 1808, Nancy in 1810, Clayborn in 1810, and Susan in 1812. James and
Mary remained in Virginia for several years as most, if not all, of their children were born in Virginia.
They were in Campbell County in 1805 but were in Charlotte County in 1809. The Charlotte County, VA
Personal Property Tax lists James Elder until 1813. The family migrated to Rutherford County, TN
between 1813 and 1816 and settled on Stewart's Creek in an area which is now on the outskirts of
LaVergne, Tennessee. James, Jr., their son, married in 1816 in Rutherford Co. The Edith Rucker Whitley
Collection of family records in Rutherford County, Tennessee appears to be correct as to the names of
their children. The first census record of the family in Tennessee is the 1820 Census of Rutherford
County. The listing of children "fits" the names and ages of the family members. It appears that Mary
"Polly" died before 1820 as she was not in the 1820 census. James died in 1824 in Rutherford County.
His son, Joshua, was appointed Administrator of his father's estate. The family were farmers as were
most people of that time. James Elder was listed in the 1810 census of Charlotte County, VA. James and
Polly had 10 children at that time, four sons and 6 daughters and their ages "fit" the James Elder family
listed in the 1820 census of Rutherford County, TN.
REF: 1810 Census of Charlotte County, VA, page 1013 (James, age 26-45,
had 2 sons under 10, 2 sons 10-16, 3 dau. Under 10 and 3 dau. 10-16).
1813 Charlotte County, VA Personal Property Tax List shows James Elder.
1820 Census of Rutherford Co, TN page 100 (James, over 45, son under 10,
son 10-16, son 16-18, dau. 10-16 and 5 dau. 16-26.
Wills, Inventories and Settlements of Rutherford County, Vol. 16, page 67.
Inventory dated 18 Oct. 1824.

>Nancy thanks for your response. The 1880 census list my
ggrandparents Frank and Sarah Jackson Elder with their
children and a boarder. Floyd is my grandfather. The
boarder, James Cowan, later married and Floyd married
his daughter Eula.
The census has Frank born in TN and his parents born in NC.
I have their marriage cert., 1857, from Lauderdale Co. Courthouse, Ripley, TN.
Also the 1850 census list Elizabeth Elder and Sarah Jackson living
together. Frank married Sarah. Elizabeth married Levy Evans 1867 in Lauderdale Co. Elizabeth is possibly Franks sister.
If anyone has information about Frank and Sarahs parents
I would be so excited to know. I will share any other
information I have. I live in Lauderdale Co. Thank Carolyn

Hi Carolyn,
Reviewing the CATE/CATES names in your Ancestry Family Tree
at

These may be the same CATE/CATES from Orange Co NC in the book:
"Families Named ELDER in East Tennessee" by Virginia Knight Nelson:

John Cates
Birth 16 Sep 1771 in Orange, North Carolina, United States
Death 9 Mar 1840 in Jefferson City, Jefferson, Tennessee, United States

Book scanned and posted on Google Documents with permission of the author:

Also found John CATE (1771 - 1840)
