| 1. Reportedly died in Revolutionary War. Information from "Families Named Elder In Tennessee" complied by Virginia Knight Nelson, 3520 Bluff Point Drive, Knoxville, Tn. 37920. 1986. Call # R 929.2 E364 003. Pg. 106 - she claimed that Andrew Elder 1748-1834 was probably the son of Matthew Elder died 1783. [js note: wrote to her July 1989 re Matthew's son Andrew who went to Ky where he died 1807 Madison Co.]. see fourth paragraph p. 106 - " In Elizabeth Elder's [Snyder/Snider - wife of the featured Andrew Elder who went to Grainger Co Tn.] pension application in 1852 she said that Andrew , her husband, had a brother Matthew who died while serving in the army and was buried at Basking Ridge, New Jersey, about 30 miles from New York.--- It is possible that this is a different branch of the same family. This family shows a strong preference for continuing family given names so it is unlikely that Matthew [d. 1783] did not name a son Matthew, however no other trace of him is known to me at this time - 10/90 except for a Matthew Elder on Fayette Co Ky 1790 census and p 34 of "index to Printed Virginia Genealogies" - Matthew Elder of well-known Valley of Va family - wife & others, May 18, 1815 - Group of commissioners to settle estate battle.
