| 1. Birth date, place & father's name from Revolutionary War Pension Application # S-12865, National Archives - made by his widow Rebecca. He came to Rockbridge Co Va from York Co Pa in 1773 with his father, 1780 to Washington Co Va. Enlisted in 1776 for 3 mo under Capt Wm. Paxto's Co - to Ft Donnelly; enlisted 1780 in Capt James Dysart's Co. of Col. Wm. Campbell's Va Regt. - served at Battle of King's Mt. 1796 moved to Lincoln Co Ky where resided at time of application. By Certic=ficate # 7656 issued 11 may 1833, given pension of $20. per annum to commence 4 Mar 1831. !Named in father's will - Washington Co Va -29 Apr 1783, proved 19 Aug 1783. [Will Book 1 p 70]. 2. ANNALS OF SOUTHWEST VA. By L. P. Summers - p. 858 - Robert Elder of Washington Co served in Revolution. p. 1186, 1194 - Aug 1784 - Robert Elder on jury. p. 1307 - 17 Mar 1795 - Robert Elder & wife Rebecca sold 174 acres of land on Middle Fork of Holston River to James Reid for 25 pounds. p. 1307 - 17 Mar 1795 - Robert Elder & wife Rebecca sold 174 &1/2 acres of land on Middle Fork of Holston River to James Elder for valuable consideration. 3. DAR APPLICATION - ? number - Gives marriage, children, burial. 4. "MARRIAGES 1780-1850 & TOMBSTONE INSCRIPTIONS" Shirley Dunn - "McCormack Church Cem near Stanford, Lincoln Co Ky." Robert Elder d 10-28-1839 80 yrs, Revolutionary Soldier; Rebecca Elder 10/21/1762 - 4/25/1839; Rebecca d 3/18/1839 77 yrs. [js note: second Rebecca was Robert's sister, unmarried, resided with he & wife - according to Allan Leach, historian of Stanford Ky. interview April 1988] [js note - visited cem Apr 1988 - took pictures of tombstone but did not come out.] Marriages of children also in above ref. 5. Robert enlisted in the Revolutionary War Jun 1778 for 3 months as a private in Captain William Paxton's Company (went to relief of Fort Donley ); enlisted again for 3 months in Captain James Dysart's Co., Colonel William Campbell's Virginia Regiment and took part in the Battle of King's Mountain - **[see pension application , DAR Register, FAMILIES NAMED ELDER IN TN" by Virginia K. Nelson, p.106, VA IGI, Lincoln Co Ky Court Records, Decatur Co In records, Va & Ky census]. 6. Robert married in Rockbridge Co Va 23 Sept 1783 - Rebecca Robinson (d/o Matthew Robinson) b. 21 Oct 1762 Va - d. 25 Apr 1839 Stanford, Lincoln Co Ky; buried in McCormack's Church Cemetary [still in use for services - made National Momument about 1987 ?? - [js note: visited in April 1988.] Robert and Rebecca moved to Lincoln Co Ky 1796. ROCKBRIDGE CO VA MARRIAGES 1778-1850 Kirkpatrick 1985, p. 73 - "Robert Elder & Rebekah Robinson 23 Sept 1783, d. Matthew Robinson; bond or license date only." 7. Will dated 4 May 1839 - proved 4 Nov. 1839, Lincoln Co Ky Court records Book 1[?] pp 185-86, names wife Rebecca and children: Mary Pemberton; Rebeccah McCormack; Jane Short; Matthew; Andrew; James; Robert; & William. **[Copy & typed transcript in files.] As per Marcella Galbraith letter - slaves left to Robert's children were freed when family members went to Indiana. 8. Mollison #9, El Cajon Ca 92020, re Robert's son James & descendents. His great grandfather John Bentley was brother to 3 sisters who married 2 Elder brothers - James m. 1. Polly B, m. 2. Sarah B.; Robert m. Jane B. Births of ELDER children from Bentley Family Bible, obtained from Mrs Marcella (Donald S.) Galbraith, 1208 South 7th., Ponca City, OK 74601 [Oct 1980] & Charles H. Harvey, 4803 Galena Dr., Colorado Springs, Co 80918 [Oct 1980 William M. Elder [s/o Robert & Rebecca] was gr-gr-grandfather of Marcella & Charles.
