How many times have you visited a Civil War battlefield such as Gettysburg or Antietam and wondered if one of your ancestors actually fought in this war. It's not that difficult to find out!

Throughout the years many individuals and organizations have strived to protect and compile our military service records. Volumes of regimental lists and company histories have been published. Chances are if your ancestor was born between the years 1825 and 1845 he, or one of his brothers served.

Many local libraries have, or can get through interlibrary loan, various publications that will help you in your search. Most librarians are familiar with this type of research, so just ask.

The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is the official depository for records of military peronnel. The records are housed in three locations: the National Archives Building, Washington, D.C., the Washington National Records Center (WNRC), Suitland, MD, and the National Personnel Records Center, St. Louis, MO.

My primary experience with these records has been at the Washington, D.C. location using the Military Pension files and Bounty Land Warrants from the Revolutionary to Civil War Veterans. I have found these files extremely helpful in compiling family histories because of the volume of personal data found in them. In order to obtain a pension for military service, the soldier, his widow and/or the guardian of his children, had to prove many aspects of the veteran's life; such as: his service record, when and where he enlisted, when and where he served, was he disabled due to his service. They also had to prove much in the way of personal information; such as: when and where he was born, his marriage(s) and children. Often the verifying affidavits included testimonies from family members and close neighbors.

The following is an index of the military pensions files for the surnames: Crippen, Crippin and Grippen found at the National Archives in Washington, D. C. Because this index is on microfilm some of the entries were difficult to read and those I have placed question marks beside. To order copies of these files, you must first write to NARA at: General Reference Branch (NNRG) National Archives and Records Administration, 8th and Pennsylvania Ave, NW, Washington, DC 20408, and order "National Archives Trust Fund (NATF) Form 80" and fill it in as completely as possible using the information provided below. If you have any questions, you can call them at 1-202-501-5400. It's important to note that the National Archives staff will not undertake an extensive search for your ancestor.
